About Calums Cabin

Calums Cabin was the vision of 12 year old Calum Speirs. Calum was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in January 2006 and he lost his fight for life a little over a year later in February 2007. Calum grew up on the Isle of Bute, and knowing he lived in such a beautiful place he thought it would be great for children suffering from cancer to come to Bute and make irreplaceable memories with their families. Calum's parents Duncan and Caroline and his twin sister Jenna committed to fulfil Calum's vision and along with the support of their family, friends, and the community on the Isle of Bute, they embarked on fundraising to build Calums Cabin. The demand was so great that Calums Cottage was purchased in 2011. Additional accommodation is also provided through the rental of Quien West Cottage on Bute and at a cottage at Dumfries House in Ayrshire. Every year, at least 145 families get the chance to visit and we are incredibly proud that Calums Cabin has helped over 1, 400 families since it began. In 2017, Calums Cabin opened the doors of its first flat in Finnieston, Glasgow. Thanks to incredible support and fundraising from our supporters, we now run 7 flats. The flats provide free ‘home from home' accommodation for families travelling many miles from home to Glasgow for their child's cancer treatment.
