Match Report - Cougars 90 vs Mildenhall 41
Cougars had another good away win over Mildenhall in Cambs League division 2. The game finished 90-41, despite a slow start by Cougars who trailed 17-21 at the end of the first quarter, and only lead 38-29 at half time. In the third quarter however, Cougars broke the game open behind the excellent shooting of Luke Batchelor, scoring with comparative ease while Mildenhall were unable to deal with our zone defence, scoring only 12 poin...ts in the entire second half. Despite two late withdrawals, the loss of Simon Croxon through injury in the first quarter, and the fact that at some points we were playing 5 guards at the same time, Cougars got stronger as the game progressed, and easily won the rebounding battle, notwithstanding an overall size disparity. There were good performances across the board, with 5 players scoring in double figures, and a willingness from everyone to share the ball, and work together as a team. A job well done. Scorers: Luke Batchelor 24, Sam Maton 14, Luke Saxton 14, Chris Hastings 12, Sam Lindley 12, Louis Couston 9, Marios Ghabrial 3 and Simon Croxon 2.
Cheers, Q.

Match Report - Cambridge Cougars vs Saffron Walden
Cougars got the new season off to a good start with a convincing 81-47 away win over Saffron Walden. Although fielding a small team, Cougars managed to stifle Saffron Walden defensively especially during the first three quarters, and that combined with good ball movement, and some excellent outside shooting against Saffron WaldenŌĆÖs zone defence, meant that Cougars were never troubled. Above all there was plenty of good team ...play, with players continually looking for the open man on offence, and helping each other out defensively. While there is still plenty to work on, a good first game overall. Scorers: Leigh Browne 16, Luke Batchelor 13, George Hart 10, Louis Couston 9, Chris Hastings 8, Sam Lindley 8, Simon Croxon 6, Sam Maton 6, Luke Saxton 3 and Mat Dowling 2.

Congrats all on a good season once again! We managed a respectable 3rd in the Cambs League, and runners up in the Cup Final to winners Svyturys (for the second year running), in a hard fought match. Looking forward to next season!

Cougars beat Newmarket. Cougars maintained their unbeaten run in the Cambs league with a 89-36 thrashing of Newmarket on 22 October, to give them three wins in a row. Cougars dominated from the start, cruising to a 34-8 lead in the first quarter, through a steady stream of steals and lay ups. The foot came off the pedal somewhat in the second quarter, with Cougars only taking it 11-6, before the first string again dominated the third quarter 25-13. While never in any danger, ...Cougars went scoreless for the first 7 minutes of the fourth quarter, before closing out with 16-1 run over the final two minutes. Defensively Cougars dominated throughout, creating numerous turnovers, and never allowing Newmarket to settle. Offensively, when not in transition, Cougars struggled somewhat, particularly with their outside shooting and ball movement. Still plenty to work on with a string of tougher games coming up. Scorers for Cougars were Ben Dowling 21,George Hart 16, Leigh Browne 15, Dan Read 13, Matt Venables 10, Yuu Kimata 6, Ash Hunter 4, Mark Dethlefsen 2 and Kevin Murden 2.

Cougars down Cats. Cougars had another victory in the Cambs league winning 68-51away against cross town rivals Cambridge Cats on 17 October. Cougars started slowly against a young Cats side, trailing by 10 early, before picking up their defensive intensity and going on a strong run to finish the first quarter 10 points ahead. Essentially that differential was maintained for the rest of the game before a further late run by Cougars pushed the score out to a 17 point victory. C...ougars did fine on the defensive end of the court, generating a lot of their points from steals and forced turnovers, but struggled to get a cohesive offence going when in a half court set. Leigh Browne was the biggest difference maker, giving Cougars speed and finishing on the break, as well as being able to score on his man consistently when the set offence broke down. Overall though, a solid performance from the team as a whole.

Cougars Win Season Opener! Cougars got their season off to a good start with a 67-46 win away to Saffron Walden in the Cambs league. The score was somewhat deceiving as the game remained close through three and a half quarters before Cougars went on a 21 -3 run to end the game. Both teams played zone defence through the entire contest, and while neither team shot particularly well from the outside, Cougars were continually able to keep the score ticking over through fast bre...aks. It was Cougars speed and ability to score in transition that eventually told in the final quarter as Cougars literally ran away with the game in the last few minutes. While perhaps a little more drawn out than it might have been, it was a good run out by Cougars, with everyone contributing, particularly defensively. Leigh Browne led the scoring with 21 points (15 of which came in the last 5 minutes), Ben Dowling has 18 (plus the assist of the night with a spectacular behind the head pass), Simon Croxon 11, Matt Venables 6, Yuu Kimata 4, Dean Murden 3, Ash Hunter 2 and Dan read 2.
