¤ÜÖIs your vision roadworthy? As we near the end of Road Safety Week, here is a handy reminder about vision standards for driving. Check when you're next behind the wheel that you are able to read a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres. Also having a regular eye examination will check you meet the following criteria: Ō£ģYou must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least 0.5 measured on the Snellen scale (with... glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) using both eyes together or, if you have sight in one eye only, in that eye. Ō£ģYou must also have an adequate field of vision - your optometrist will test for this. www.gov.uk/driving-eyesight-rules

This is very unusual (and not very pleasant!), but it's a reminder that an eye examination can show signs of a huge variety of health issues. Another reason to make sure you ensure you have your eyes examined at least every two years. Book online at cameronoptom.com or call 0131 225 2235.

Great to see this message is getting more exposure. Here is more advice from us on reducing the chance of your child becoming short-sighted. Ō¼ć Ō£ģLike the article says, increase the amount of time spent outside each day. The brightness of natural light is thought to limit the rate of myopia progression. An average of 90 minutes a day is a good target. This can be spread through the week allowing you to ŌĆ£top upŌĆØ at the weekend. Ō£ģLimit screen time, and other close work (over and ...above school work) to two hours per day. This includes computers, tablets, smart phones, hand-held computer games, as well as drawing and reading. Try and hold close tasks as far away as is comfortable, avoiding the temptation to hold things very close. Ō£ģTake vitamin D. There is some evidence that taking a vitamin D supplement can slow the establishment of myopia. While this evidence is limited as to the effects this will have on reducing myopia it is understood that everyone in Scotland is at risk of not getting enough vitamin D so this may be good advice anyway Ō£ģRegular eye examinations. All children should have their eyes examined every two years from pre-school, however if you notice any changes in your childŌĆÖs vision, make an appointment as soon as possible. Signs that they need to see an optometrist include noticing them squinting at the TV, complaining of headaches, difficulty reading or problems with coordination or concentration. Myopic children can be unaware that they are not seeing as well as they could be presuming their vision is the same as everyone elses. Myopia generally starts after the age of pre-school vision screening so even if you have had this assessment you should consider bringing your child in for an eye examination before their fifth birthday. Ō£ģStart early. The earlier in life these steps are taken, the best chance they have of making a difference. Take these steps from the outset and you are reducing your childŌĆÖs chance of becoming short-sighted. Ō£ģMyopia Management. If your child is short-sighted Myopia Management contact lenses would be worth considering. The lenses slow the progression of short-sightedness, meaning when they reach adulthood they will have a lower a prescription than without the lenses. Ō×Ī’ĖÅYou will find a raft of information on myopia in children here www.cameronoptom.com/myopia

Halloween contact lenses - please take note of this advice The Association of Optometrists has shared tips and advice for patients who are planning to wear novelty contact lenses for Halloween. Highlighting the importance of getting contact lenses fitted by a professional, they added that contact lenses carry a risk of eye infections if they are not fitted and cared for properly. Advice from an optometrist should be sought immediately if a patient experiences any discomfort. Warning signs include redness, pain or an aversion to light. https://www.aop.org.uk/ŌĆ”/23/avoiding-a- fright-this-halloween

Your child's sight is so precious. Good vision helps them to learn, play and communicate with the world around them. The number one piece of advice any eye care professional will offer is to ensure they have regular eye examinations. The sooner any issues are identified, the better the outcome. In addition, eating a rainbow diet, full of colourful fruit and veg, as well as fish, eggs and grains will give them lots of eye-friendly nutrients. And always ensure their eyes are pr...otected in the sun. Contact lenses wearers - how to reduce your chance of developing an eye infection There have been a few reports in the news this week about a rare eye infection affecting contact lens wearers. With this in mind, we thought we'd remind people about best practice for cleaning and storing contact lenses. If you have any concerns about your eyes, please book in with your optometrist. ¤æüCleaning and storing After removing your lenses, clean them immediately to remove mucus, prot...ein and debris that build up on the surface during the day. ŌĆó Place the lens in your palm and apply a few drops of cleaning solution as recommended by your optometrist. Gently rub the lens in a circular motion with your nger, not rubbing the lens too hard. ŌĆó Rinse the cleaner off with an approved lens rinsing solution. ŌĆó Fill the case with fresh cleaning solution to protect your lenses overnight. Always use fresh solution each time you clean and store your lenses. ŌĆó After use, rub the inside of your case with clean ngers, rinse with fresh disinfecting solution and allow to air-dry naturally. See image below. ŌĆó Replace your storage case whenever you open a fresh bottle of solution.
ŌØŚ’ĖÅRemember ŌĆó Always wash and dry your hands thoroughly before handling your lenses. Avoid using soaps that are strongly perfumed or contain moisturisers. ŌĆó Do not sleep in your lenses unless advise to by your optometrist. ŌĆó Do not use tap water or saliva to rinse your lenses or case. ŌĆó Use fresh solution each time you clean and store your soft lenses. ŌĆó Do not swim or shower in your lenses without seeking the advice of your optometrist. ŌĆó Avoid lens mix-ups. Always start with the same contact lens when you apply, remove and clean your lenses. ŌĆó If your eyes become red and/or painful at any time, please remove your lenses and seek the advice of your optometrist.

Our younger son now requires his pre-school eye tests and we won't hesitate in taking him there too.
