About Campbeltown Picture House

Campbeltown Picture House is one of the first purpose built cinemas in Scotland, built in 1913. This Grade-A listed building is unique, with a Glasgow school art nouveau exterior and an equally impressive and unusual ‘atmospheric style' interior. It survives today as a rare space, largely unaltered from the 1935 remodelling by the original architect Albert V. Gardner. In 2016 /2017 the building underwent extensive refurbishment including;Restoration of the historic auditorium; including modern heating, ventilation and seating for 197 cinemagoers; 119 in the stalls, 74 in the balcony, plus 4 wheelchair spaces. Restoration of the unique art nouveau frontage of the buildingA new, contemporary foyer and cafĂ©Creation of a multi-purpose exhibition space /meeting room /education room /green roomCreation of a second state-of-the-art cinema auditorium with 54 seats and 2 wheelchair spaces, complementing the historic cinema and providing programming flexibilityA programme of heritage interpretation and education activities focusing on the history of the Picture House, of cinema, and of Campbeltown's social and cultural lifeImproved energy use throughout the venue including a modern efficient central heating system powered by a biomass wood-pellet boiler, extensive insulation, and a photo-voltaic array on the roofIncreased storage space for equipment, materials and furniture to support educational activities and business meetingsImproved accessibility throughout. Opening in Autumn 2017, the Picture House will provide a cultural hub for the community and add to the town's tourist attractions.
