From the 9th - 15th of April we will be hosting a great selection of beers from Tryst Brewery.
On Wednesday the 11th we will be holding a special food and beer dinner.
The evening will start at 7pm with a welcome drink on arrival easing you into the first course at 7.30pm. There will be five more courses to follow, each one created and paired by our Head Chef to compliment one of Tryst Brewerys' delicious beers. The dinner will be hosted by Head Brewer John McGarva who will ...speak a little about each of the beers before the accompanying course arrives. It will be a very casual and sociable evening so please feel free to ask any Tryst related questions you may have and John will do his best to provide some clarity!
The fare for the evening will be;
1. Ale steamed Shetland mussels in a garlic and parsley cream.
2. Hand dived scallops and prosciutto crisp with a cauliflower and vanilla puree.
3. Partridge and ricotta ravioli with sauteed tarragon and wild mushrooms.
4. Char grilled wild sea bass on a pickled fennel and cashew nut salad with a curried coconut dressing.
5. Rare breed lamb cutlets on a bed of minted barley risotto and an ale jus.
6. A trio of chocolate tarts with a mixed berry compote and pistachio shortbread.
And the beers? Well that's best kept for the night!

Once upon a time in a far away land there was an olde tavern called The Canons' Gait. Within this tavern travelers from all around would gather and recount tales of their heroic adventures. At one such table there sat a "Norseman" named Nick and his comrade Chris the "Crusader". As they drank merry and reflected on their most virtuous of quests they peaked the interest of a nearby "Nobleman". Hoping to hear of more such fables his two new friends did not disappoint!
Due to o...ver consumption of ale the details of the resulting anecdote are a bit vague but in short, there was a castle....a "Redcastle" and within this "Redcastle" was a tower that come midnight was in perfect alignment with the North star. This was the "Tower I.P.A". The "Tower I.P.A" was guarded by a "Dark Knight" who kidnapped the flame haired maiden from the neighbouring kingdom and imprisoned her within the tower. As word spread of this "Red Lady" being captured bounties were set and hero's were slain! All but two of course....
I guess what I'm trying to say is we will be hosting many a fine ale from Redcastle Brewery from the 5th - 11th of March and with just enough grog down the hatch you too may embark on a great adventure! Or not. Please drink responsibly.

Pint of Science are visiting Canon's Gait on 15th-17th May for a talk on Our Body!

We booked the function room downstairs at the Canon's Gait for a family gathering and it was great! The manager Chris was very helpful while booking the venue and arranging food for everyone. It was the perfect space for what I was looking for: something informal with good food. Thanks!

User

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Food was lovely and reasonably priced

The cellar bar is a great place for a private function. I wanted somewhere to go with friends for a bit of birthday dancing and it turned out to be a great choice. We played our own music and were able to clear some space for a dance floor. The staff were very friendly and helpful and everybody had a great time. I would definitely recommend it. :)

Six years ago we first visited Canon's Gait and we've always remembered their haggis, neeps and tatties! We came back and hoped for the same and it was still on the menu but now put together in a tower...still very good! Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. Will definitely come again!

User

Perfect dinner. Two times Steak, one F&C and one Haggis. Everything was delicious.

User

OMG the food is amazing. Fantastic staff great wine. Will be coming back for more. 5 star plus. Great find.

User

I've already been to a few Christmas nights out this year but have to say the quality and flavour of your Christmas menu was the best, service was fantastic too and with a great choice of beers, perfect. Thanks very much and merry Christmas

User

Great food, beers, and service. Was a little nervous because there weren’t many people when we arrived, but we’re glad we did! We were on our way from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood.

User

Delicious food and great service! Really glad we stumbled upon this lovely place during our stay!

User

Called in again , after visiting last year ! I love this place , surrounded by history , but modern interior , staff lovely , all the different ales , haggis neeps & tatties & whisky sauce , delicious !!! Great little place ! Would recommend highly !!

User

A group of 8 ladies eat lunch in your pub yesterday afternoon. The man said they were short staffed. We received excellent service , food was delicious and the staff were so polite. We would all highly recommend eating here

User

We held our grandsons Naming Day in the downstairs room last Sunday. Ideal for our purposes. 25 people and a bar. We were able bring our own nibbles for the function. Our son is a chef so this worked out well. Staff were outstanding and nothing was too much trouble for them. Excellent choice of drinks, quite reasonably priced. We came all the way from Australia for this. The venue didn't disappoint. Most impressed

User

Visiting the Fringe from Newcastle. The bar and staff were lovely. I ordered Salmon which was delicious and the best chips I've eaten in a long time my husband ordered the burger and he also said it was delicious, definitely home made. Nice bar and atmosphere, would definitely recommend and will visit again.

User

Great pub and I love the new look. Allowed me to book tables, for drinks only (on the busiest Friday of the year - a lot of other pubs wouldn't). The function room downstairs is a great space for a private do ,where you can hook up your iPod/laptop etc and have your own music. There's even space if you want a dance. Staff were great, very calm and patient trying to get us all out when the pub shut. Can't wait to come back and try the menu.

User

Excellent place food good value staff very friendly. Good range of beers and nice atmosphere 👍🍺🍺

User

Very friendly attentive without being intrusive service. Smiles appear genuine rather than out on so no faults with staff. Good wee single malt selection. Food Cullen skink was fine. Nothing to write home about but not much to complain about. Fish was quite mashed up and skink should have chunks of fish not mash. Ate most of it and wasn't too watery or too creamy. Nice chargrilled bread and butter to go with. Ambience OK for lunch. Maybe better at night. Only had shandy so can't comment on ales. Main was minted lamb burger. Was cooked well but bit tasteless. Couldn't taste the mint. Hand-cut chips little greasy but not too bad. Toasted bun nice. Would go back to try something else primarily because of the pleasant service with a smile especially the hello and smile upon entering. Good meet and greet. Possible improvements in food quality but will review again when go back in few weeks.

User

The staff was friendly and very helpful, recommended a special that I didn't even know about. The drinks were good but the burger was rather upsetting. The burgers are supposed to be house made but it was rubbery and cooked from frozen. They must be using a charcoal grill because there was a very overwhelming smell of charcoal smoke on the bun and patty. The fries were the best part of the meal. Overall good atmosphere and drinks.

User

Went in yesterday with my mum and sister. Staff didn't even acknowledge us when we came in, sat down for about 10 minutes with staff walking past and never spoke to us once. Place wasn't even busy... making it even more embarassing for the awful service. Could see other customers getting the same "service" as well. We didn't stay to eat and i definitely wouldn't recommend it or ever go back. Shocking!

User

Having a great time with friends, celebrating our last day at uni, we were just gathering our things ready to move on when a member of staff came over and said they had had complaints that we were too noisy and could we keep the noise down as we were causing people to leave! What?! We were not being any noisier than anyone in there, it's a pub not a church so sorry if we thought we were allowed to laugh and chat, and it was Friday night - what's the problem?! Such a shame as we'd been having a great time till then. So all that happens now, which clearly if they knew anything about customer service they would understand, is that rather than maybe mention to one or two people about what a nice time we had, we will now all tell at least ten people what a crap time we had - think about it, a rant about how rubbish somewhere is is much more interesting than hearing about how great somewhere is. Very disappointing. Won't be back.
