About Carnegie Harriers

Carnegie Harriers are a friendly Dunfermline-based running club who cater for the interests of road, country, hill, ultra, trail and fun running.

Carnegie Harriers Description

Carnegie Harriers were formed in August 1991, to cater for the interests of road runners in the Dunfermline area.

Since then our range of activities has been extended to include cross country, ultra and hill running. Whatever the distance, someone in the club is likely to have run it - from a mile to a marathon and considerably beyond.

As well as taking part in races throughout Scotland and beyond, we do our bit to promote the sport by organising a number of events during the year. These include the highly successful Graham Clark 3. 9 Mile Memorial Race, run on a unique course round Knockhill Racing Circuit; the two new Devilla Forest trail races of 5k and 15k. These are all open races and attract runners of all abilities. In addition, we run the member-only Festive Forest Run in Blairadam Forest, which is usually followed by a social outing.

The club provides an opportunity to make new friends and we aim to cater for different levels of ability, although we cannot cater for absolute beginners. We advise that beginners join a local JogScotland group for a number of weeks to build basic fitness and then come along to training sessions. Our structured training sessions are designed to help improve the fitness and performance of our members. The club meets for training at The Pitreavie Sports and Soccer Centre, Pitreavie Playing Fields, Dunfermline, every Tuesday and Thursday at 6. 20pm (for a 6. 30pm start). Informally we explore new routes and exchange training ideas.

For the more competitive there is the chance to represent the club in a variety of events during the year. The club has a number of annual awards, where we give prizes in all three disciplines of road, hill and cross country running. There is also the relatively new All Rounder Competition, which asks members to take part in all three disciplines.

Chacefield Woods Trail Race report courtesy of Steven Honeyman.
The trails were awash with green and orange as our off-road Grand Prix kicked-off on Thursday evening with its inaugural event, the 'Chacefield Woods 6k Trail Race'. A recent survey focussing on the training and racing aspirations of our members highlighted an increasing interest in off-road and trail running, and the committee were pleased to introduce this new Grand Prix for the 19/20 race season.
It has been ...

Carnegie Harriers Training – April 2019
Here are details of our training sessions for the month of April. More detailed information can be found on our website: www.carnegie-harriers.co.uk/training/
Please note that sessions may be changed or cancelled at short notice due to unforeseen circumstances, such as bad weather, problems with the venue etc.
... It can be more difficult to be motivated to get out and run, especially in inclement weather and one of the benefits of being a member of a running club is that it's much easier to run in company.
Non Members Welcome Non-members are welcome to come along to try out our sessions anytime. Don't worry if you don't understand some of the technical details, the sessions are explained in more detail on the night. Also, don’t be put off by description of the sessions, you need only do as much as you want or feel able.
If you are planning to come along for the first time, we would ask that you contact us first, preferably by email to enquiries@carnegie-harriers.co.uk and let us know a little about your experience as a runner, such as how often you train, how far and what pace, also any recent race times. We can then provide you with a bit more information on the club and arrange to meet you on the night.
As we aim to start the sessions promptly, please make sure you turn up in good time so that we can say hello before we hear the pre-session briefing.
Session Aims All of our training is aimed at creating long-term physical changes in the body, referred to as adaptations. Key among this is the principle of overload, where the body is pushed beyond its normal rhythm. Overloading should be gradual over time to avoid causing injury.
The number of repetitions and the pace at which they are to be run are for guidance only. If you are tapering before, or recovering after, a big race, or returning from illness/injury or just had a really bad day, you can reduce the number of repetitions, or the pace, or both.
Session Details On Tuesday evenings we’ll be using a relatively flat loop in Pittencrieff Park (aka The Glen).
On Thursdays our “speed” sessions will be based in Rex Park in Dunfermline and directions to get there have been provided. We are also planning to offer an off-road alternative so if you are interested in this, please contact us for further information.
Don’t worry, a full explanation is given before the start of each session and there is an opportunity for you to ask questions if you’re not sure about anything.
The session start times listed below are the times we leave from Pitreavie Sport and Soccer Centre to head to the specified venue on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The training sessions proper start approximately 20 minutes later and anyone going direct to the session starting points on either evening is asked to make sure they leave time to warm up properly before the sessions start.

Race Report from Bishops Hill Race by Hill Running Captain Colin Reynolds.
There were far more favourable conditions for this years running of Bishop Hill Race. As the morning moderated somewhat to give the runners a blustery outing but nothing untoward.
Ten Carnegie Harriers assembled, just in time for the prompt 2 pm start (or it would have been if we hadn’t delayed it taking our team photo). Off they went descending an initial ten feet into a gully before climbing 860 feet...

Race Report by Gordon Barrie.
5 Harriers sacrificed a Sunday morning lie in and travelled through to Markinch to take part in PB Timing's Skull Mountain trail race. This was race number 2 in the Skull Mountain series and the setting was Balbirnie Park.
Skull Mountain has an ominous sound to it. One might anticipate vertical climbs and underwear soiling descents. The reality of this race was thankfully much less traumatic. The 7k route was a nice mixture of grass, well define...d park paths and trails. Like all PB races there's always a twist, this one was a 10 metre wade through a stream!! There was one steep hill to negotiate but it wasn't too long. The weather conditions were perfect too, it felt like a warm spring day.
For anyone who has taken part in a PB race before you know what to expect. A friendly atmosphere, not too many entrants so it never feels crowded, a well thought out route, quick results and a bit of bling too. They really do represent excellent value for money.
The first Harrier home was Andrew Spence in 36:29 closely followed by Charlotte Briggs in 36:45. Gordon would have been competing but suffered a calf muscle relapse at around the 5.5k mark and limped home in 38:57. Next across the finishing line was Claire Henderson in 39:27 followed by Harrier number 5 Stephen Greer in 43:12.
A great way to spend a Sunday morning.

Report on Devilla races by Allan Macaulay
On Sunday 17th February Carnegie Harriers welcomed over 700 runners to their annual Devilla Forest Trail races, comprising a 15k and a 5k race. The event continues to grow in popularity with this year’s 15k race selling out within 25 minutes of entries opening!
The races attract runners from many parts of Scotland and local clubs showed their support by sending large representations of runners to the event. However the club with the...

A wee taster of what to expect from today's official race shots, courtesy of Carnegie member Steve Adam. Steve's the one you may have seen lying on his stomach at the side of the trail, looking like a sniper (albeit armed with a camera rather than a rifle ;-) )
Eventual race winner Gregor Malcolm (Edinburgh Uni Hares and Hounds) alongside 2nd placed Matt Bird (Portobello Running Club).
