Open Tuesdays – Saturdays 10am – 4pm The Fire Station, 76-78 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh, EH3 9DE
This unique exhibition honours a remarkable group of people who sat intelligence tests as children and have been followed up as adults since 1999 to transform our understanding of ageing. Vibrant portraits reveal the personalities behind this study and will be displayed alongside scientific treasures, marrying art and science to celebrate the lives of individuals who make research... possible.
Renowned portraitist Fionna Carlisle has captured the individuality and depth of her subjects using her signature style of colourful, bold brushstrokes to reflect their vitality. Her portraits execute a transformation of the sitter-as-seen, weaving the life story and spirit of the sitter into the paint.
The paintings – curated by Duncan Thomson, former Director at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery – are showcased alongside scientific highlights from the study, including a 3D-printed brain and a block detailing exquisite patterns of the brain etched in crystal. A special portrait of Nobel-prize winning physicist Peter Higgs is also on display.

We are still looking for volunteers to take part in Chloe Fawn-Ritchie's study! Are you aged 40-80 and live in or near #Edinburgh? Could you spare 2.5 hours to help? By trying out these tasks you will be helping us to compare different methods of cognitive testing, which could aid dementia research in future. We welcome everyone, but at the moment, male participants are especially encouraged to help us balance the study. Interested? Please email Chloe at c.fawns-ritchie@ed.ac.uk

How old are you? Well, it depends on whether we ask your date of birth, or examine your body, brain or DNA. Did you know that each might give a different answer?
Hands-on activities for children and adults. And the chance to speak directly to CCACE researchers. Drop in anytime between 10am-4.30pm... Learning Centre, Level 2, National Museums Scotland (walk past millennium clock, towards lecture theatre, and take the stairs/lift on far right, up to level 2)
How old is your body? Try out some of the physical tests that the LBC participants do every 3 years.
How old is your DNA? Play our DNA methylation game to find out how researchers calculate the 'age' of your DNA.
How old is your Brain? Teach our computer to tell the difference between a brain scan of a 20 year old and 60 year old and hear about how machine learning is helping researchers to discover new things about brain ageing.
How old is your Face? Take part in a real experiment by guessing peoples' age from their photo (in association with AgeGuess - https://www.ageguess.org/)
