Fantastic beasts and where to find them. Our copy of Petrus Comestor's Scholastica historia (c.1485), apparently.

It's Burns Night today - for the occasion, here's a lovely selection of Burns' songs, nicely illustrated by ECA student John Short (ECA/TYP/1/134, 1970s)

Donald Trump meets Latin satire: over on our Rare Books blog. Read about another contribution to the student Notgeld project, satirising current American politics, along with political satire from Elizabethan England. http://libraryblogs.is.ed.ac.uk/ŌĆ”/rare- books-expect-the-unŌĆ”/

A glimpse of some of the Margaret Morris archive returning to its home at the Fergusson Gallery, Perth, yesterday. Six crates of the pioneering dancer's archive have now been cleaned, rehoused and repaired by our brilliant conservation team as part of the 'Body Language' project!

What initially looks like a normal title page in Iulii Firmici Astronomicorum (Aldus 1499) actually has the woodcut from the title page of Ex recognitione Des Erasmi Roterodami (Froben, 1518) pasted on it!

Louise Gardiner, Philip E. Bennett, and Sarah Carpenter have published a fantastic article on the five Jousting Letters of the Royal Letter Book (MS 183), a medieval manuscript from our collection written in the 1390s-1410s and containing several hundred copy letters of royal correspondence. Jousting letters were a kind of "fantasy letters", in which mythological queens or ladies recommended worthy combatants to the lady presiding over a joust at the English court. A fascinating read!
