Rupert Everett was a regular on the Citizens stage in the 1980s and 1990s, and is now one of Hollywood's leading men. The Citz still holds a special place in Rupert's heart, as he told us when he came to pay a final visit before we close for redevelopment.

‘One more sleep till christmas’ is the best kids performance I’ve seen. Actors were great with the kids and the pace and direction were excellent in the circle theatre space. My nephew & I loved it!

User

rita sue & bob too. absolutely loved it. only thing we could ALL agree on was, we were very disappointed with the ending. thought we would have heard the famous song which i wont name haha...also no interval. other than that.. the cast were ALL amazing. laughted from start to finish.

User

User

We don't go often enough. This occassion was like every other. Great night away from our normal routine. Not to expensive and a varied and pleasant bunch of people. Fabulous, friendy staff and a great wee theatre. Good to have something positive to talk about the next day. Love it.

User

Took the kids 4, 8 and 10 ( and the husband) to see Cinderella. We all loved it. Fabulous acting, costumes, music and stage production. Would highly recommend!

User

Thoroughly enjoyed the performance of ‘One More Sleep Til Christmas’ today. Don’t want to spoil any surprises but the ending was just magical loved the interaction from the cast and the relaxed atmosphere. Fab

This Restless House. Absolutely amazing. In a cast that shone throughout a special mention has to go to Pauline Knowles who made Clytemnestra a real, sympathetic character.

Not an easy watch but that is how Greek drama was meant to be and the ending was beautiful.

It made me realise that when we go to see the classics , and Yerma which I saw recently is a case in point, we are distanced from it so we tend to go to see the performances and the production.

But what this production, and the production of Yerma, did was pack an emotional and visceral punch as it would have done when first seen. Like the recent Almeida version the Furies became part of the murderer's mental breakdown ( although in this version it is Electra who commits the murder not Orestes.)

For the first audience, the plays were their history: the forging of democracy and the setting up of a judicial system that relied on a jury of peers, all new and novel to the Athenian audience for whom the Furies were real living entities.

But here the Chorus became the homeless and the play about guilt, betrayal and mental illness all relevant topics. It managed to modernise it, make it relevant but it was still the same play that Aeschylus wrote and audiences sat down to watch in fifth century Athens.

Definitely something I'll be thinking about for days to come.

The Citz is my favourite theatre. It has a fantastic background in being a community theatre for all, with their subsidised, free and 50p tickets, backstage tours, educational courses and regular involvement of the community in shows, there's no theatre like it. It has a very relaxed and open atmosphere, and the staff are excellent. No query is too much for them to help you with, whether you're asking about the history of the theatre, about upcoming shows, or anything else, they always do their best to accommodate.

The shows are varied; from Scottish socially important pieces, stand up, reinterpretations of Greek classics, family Christmas shows, and kids specific events the Citz tend to be less mainstream than other Glasgow theatres and that's better for the theatre, and the patrons.

Paul wrote a brilliant review of This Restless House. I would add I loved the way the chorus was the outcasts: the old, disabled, homeless and those suffering from mental health issues. They were brilliant: ' Don't listen to us, don't even look at us. No-one does! Why not leave now, We're just embarrassing!' Uncomfortably accurate and so powerful! Who better to comment on the doings of their so-called betters? The play felt so modern and showed the cycle of pain, guilt and regret and its descent into mental illness. The acting was so powerful, Aeschylus showed the suffering induced in each character by love, guilt and regret. One aspect of the furies was uncontrollable itching. Made me itch all over: too real by half ! Bringing a therapist to explore Electra's 'demons allowed us to experience her horrors alongside her. Truly terrifying. Such a powerful, modern production. Totally brilliant 🖒

I loved the reconciliation at the end . We flew up from London to see this. PLEASE consider filming and broadcasting live production like National Theatre Encore & Live etc. It would give the whole country a chance to see the talent and expertise alive & well at the Citizens Theatre.

Just wanted to say thank you to the cast of the "One More Sleep 'Til Christmas" show last week. My kids 3 and 5, dont like scary loud panto style shows so when the lady on @GlasgowWithKids wrote a brilliant review of this show said it was funny and not loud or scary i knew it was the one for us!

When i realised tickets were £9 each, I was sold! The cast were totally into chatting with the kids before and during the show. Ours were enthralled from the off. They loved it (so did Mum and Dad) and were still telling us how much they liked it 2 days later! We all had big smiles on our faces at the end!

Thank you to the actors (& writers) as we didnt get to applaud them at the end!

User

I love the Citizens! It's small, intimate and just what a theatre should look like! We saw "Cuttin a Rug" and the cast put on a wonderful performance!!! We got the tickets through the 50p tickets day,so we had a great day out for a £1!!!! Cant wait to go back for the next 50p bargain!!!!

User

I love going to the Citz ,small theatre with great productions . This week it was Travel with my Aunt, very funny with only four cast members. All were male and you have got to appreciate the hard work that went into this. Really enjoyed it. Will definitely be returning to the Citz.

User

Great place. Check out the Black out space for small performances where you can get super close to the action!!

User

First visit to this theatre and I was pleasantly surprised. Lovely theatre and very friendly staff.

User

Fantastic show everyone who can must go and see this pure entertainment.

User

Fabulous evening watching trainspotting at the Citz theatre in the heart of Glasgow. Amazing performances and sets. Incredibly gritty and fun at the same time. Well done!

User

Congratulations to the cast of ‘One more sleep till Christmas’. Sorry the ending meant you didn’t get your well deserved round of applause. Seeing you and the children’s reactions is an absolute treat. Can’t wait till next year.

User

I LOVE the Citz. Have done for over 60 years.

Cutting a Rug was a first class production- Director, and Actors and stage management superbe. My feet were tapping with the gloriously nostalgic music, but... and this has nothing to do with the production- it was so so cold in the theatre at the afternoon performance. Reduced my enjoyment only a little!

User

Writing to say I enjoyed the performance, but had an encounter which slightly sullied my night.

I've been to the theatre a couple of times - tonight I watched Long Day's Journey. It was heart-wrenchingly stellar, I loved it - the performance, the set, the direction. I'm very familiar with this play and thought it was done great justice tonight.

However, I'm sad to say that I had a rather unpleasant experience with the counter staff. I had wanted to purchase a poster from the theatre (displayed under 'Artwork for Sale') as a gift to a friend who I knew would love it. Pre-show I approached the counter staff when I collected my tickets, and was turned away because I told that the poster would have to be searched for and rolled up for me, and the staff was currently short on time. I understand that it's a busy time issuing tickets pre-show, so I left it. I was also told I could make the purchase online (I have looked online and can't seem to find them).

During the interval, I notice the counter was being manned by a gentleman, and approached him to ask if I could purchase the poster. I was met with a rather curt reply, telling me that the interval bell was 'literally going to ring'. I felt he was being unnecessarily impatient with me, and was prepared to leave the purchase. However, he told me that he would prepare the poster and I could look for him and buy it after the play. Once the play was over, I exited to search for him but noticed the counter was empty.

Overall, I felt really disappointed because I just wanted to gift a poster to a friend. I don't understand why the theatre would display posters for sale if it's difficult to make the sale. I'm sure purchasing the artwork is a form of supporting the theatre and the good work it does, and the curt reluctance of the staff to make the sale really surprised me.
