Every year the City Art Centre lends out artworks from its collection to other museums and galleries across the country for temporary exhibitions. This stunning painting ‘Rocks, St Mary’s, Scilly Isles’ by Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, is currently on display at the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge for their exhibition ‘Virginia Woolf: An exhibition inspired by her writings’: https://www.fitzmuseum.cam.ac.uk/virginia woolf (Image courtesy of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust)

The hang of our amazing Robert Blomfield photographs is progressing and we can report they look fantastic in our gallery. You are going to love them!

We have a fresh new look here at the City Art Centre. Our front of house teams have a new uniform as well as their management team (here pictured in Royal Blue). They are looking forward to welcoming you to the gallery. :)

'Robert Blomfield: Edinburgh Street Photography - An Unseen Archive' opens on 24 November. Robert Blomfield, who celebrated his 80th birthday in February, moved from Leeds to Edinburgh to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1956, when he was 18. He pursued his passion for photography and, over the next decade, spent his free time capturing life on the streets of Edinburgh and Glasgow. The amateur photographer used a pair of Nikon F SLRs, shot mainly in black and ...white and did his own developing and printing in a makeshift darkroom set up in his student halls.
Here is the very camera that captured all that magic.

We have some wonderful images of Victorian Edinburgh in our collection by a very early photographer, Thomas Vernon Begbie, and some are currently on show in our current exhibition, 'In Focus: Scottish Photography' (Sat 7 Jul 2018 to Sun 12 May 2019). These old photographs are an invaluable record of Victorian Edinburgh. Oh how we would loved a browse in Paul Wishart!

At last, the lovely photographs by Robert Blomfield have arrived at the City Art Centre, and here is Robert's son Ed laying them out for their hang! This is going to be a spectacular show and one you don't want to miss. The exhibition opens on Saturday 24 November.

Happy #RLSDay. On this day, 13 November 1850, Robert Louis Stevenson was born in Edinburgh.

User

excellent exhibition of works by Gillies and Maxwell, truly wonderful walking through, reading the scripts and enjoying the works.

User

Went back to see the Edinburgh Alphabet for a second time and was lucky enough to coincide with one of your tours on Saturday. Our guide (sorry, I didn't catch his name) brought a lot of enthusiasm and drew our attention to things we would otherwise have missed ourselves.

Thank you.

User

Very nice exhibit of the work of Edwin Lucas.

User

The Edinburgh art centre is contemporary and modern and stylish with welcoming staff. Lots of interesting artists work to see with a lovely open plan shop selling a wide range of contemporary items. I very much enjoyed my visit to the city art centre and hope to return sometime in the future.

User

Sublime exhibition of William Gillies and John Maxwell but why oh why isn't there an accompanying book or brochure?

User

Nice building. Loved the A-Z exhibition. Would visit again.

User

Magnifique.

User

Lovely space and I really enjoyed the paintings in the basement and exhibtion of stitching and quilts upstairs. Very friendly helpful staff too. Thank you very much.

User

It's fantastic fine arts center with lots seasonal, very interesting exhibitions!

User

I wil return again!!

User

I always enjoy a visit to the City Art Centre but the current exhibition is exceptional. Interesting, stimulating and fun! I got the impression that all those who collaborated to bring together such an eclectic mixture of things from the city's collection had really enjoyed the experience. I certainly did.

User

Great exhibition, Gillies watercolours are beautiful, Maxwells impasto oils superb! The paper trail on -1 exhibition is good too. Ernest Stephen Lumsden's work was a revelation.

User

Great experience at Edinburgh science festival, really well thought out age appropriate exhibits and workshops for the kids. The teaching staff and gallery staff were excellent. The cloakroom was full and the cafe very overcrowded but we loved the shop and accessibility from Waverley.

User

Excellent exhibit. Maybe a bit more "schooling " of the staff on the actual exhibits.

VERY noisy escalator.
