Clare Delderfield - Humanist Celebrant Description
I live near Cambridge and I'm a Humanist Celebrant who conducts non religious funerals in South Cambridgeshire and some of the bordering counties, including Suffolk, Essex and Hertfordshire.
I came to train as a celebrant with the British Humanist Association after experiencing a humanist funeral of a family member for the first time. The celebrant transformed what was a terribly sad and difficult occasion into a truly positive, personal and meaningful experience for the whole family. I thought it was so important that non-religious families have this option available to them that I decided to find out about the training, and I have never looked back.
I have now conducted well over 100 funerals and end of life ceremonies including cremations, burials, internment of ashes and memorials.
When I'm contacted about a funeral I go to meet the family or loved ones of the person who has died. I will talk in depth with them about their loved one and the sort of ceremony that they would want. The ceremony can include music, poetry or readings that reflected their life. Family and friends will be welcome to take part in this meeting. When needed, I am happy talk with other family members or friends over the phone in addition to a family visit.
I am also happy to discuss with people the type of ceremony they may like for themselves when they die. It can be a great relief to some to know that all their wishes will be met, and to get to know the person who will be conducting the ceremony for them and their family when the time comes.
It is an absolute privilege to be allowed into people’s lives at such a difficult time, and to help them to prepare to celebrate the life of a loved one. Whilst sadness is an inevitable part of the role, it is also hugely rewarding.
