Connecting Through Art Therapy

About Connecting Through Art Therapy

Art therapy is for everyone. Despite preconceptions, you do not need to be 'able to draw' to be able to connect to yourself and others through art.

Connecting Through Art Therapy Description

What is art therapy?

Art therapy is a type of psychotherapy that uses the relationship between the client, therapist, and art work to explore the client's feelings. Art therapy is a protected title, which means only trained and HCPC registered practitioners can call themselves art therapists or say they provide art therapy.

How does it help?

Art therapy is supported by a number of theories, and for me attachment theory, neuroscience, and the self-soothing nature of art-making underlie my practice. Each person may find art therapy helps them in different ways, some of which may be:

- to feel more connected,
- to find out new things about themselves,
- to identify the causes of feelings,
- to connect with early memories,
- to express and process traumatic events

Making art in therapy can give life to feelings, and provide a safe environment to explore this.

What do I provide?

As a private practitioner I provide a variety of ways to engage with art therapy. I offer individual sessions with adults, young people and children, as well as working with parent and child to strengthen relationships, and group work. There is also some opportunity for creating outdoors.

You will be able to use a variety of art materials including paints, pens, pastels, clay, collage, felt making and sewing. You may also decide to use found objects. You may decide there are times you do not want to make art.

I work from Commondale, North York Moors, from the village hall.
