Tomorrow the Glasgow Wind Band will perform the Glenmasan Manuscript Concerto, conducted by composer Marc Jeanbourquin, in St John’s Cathedral, Oban, 2.30pm, in a tribute to the story of Deirdre and Naoise which links Scotland and Ireland in a legendary tale of love.
The Glenmasan Manuscript Concerto was written by Swiss composer Marc Jeanbourquin in 2016. It takes its name from an early written account of Deirdre's story – the 12th century Glen Massan Manuscript – which was ...discovered in Argyll 160 years ago and is now held in the National Library for Scotland in Edinburgh. The story captured the heart of Jeanbouquin, who wrote the concerto in tribute.
The concert marks the one-year anniversary of the unveiling of the 'Sheiling for Deirdre and Naoise'. The Sheiling, pictured here, is situated on Beinn Ghlas, not far from Gleann Èite, the place Deirdre and Naoise were said to have found a moment of peace. The Sheiling was officially unveiled at a ceremony on 23 June 2018. The tragic story of lovers Deirdre and Naoise is one of the great tales of the shared inheritance of the peoples of Ireland and Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇮🇪
