Ever had a burning desire to cycle 300km through the night in a foreign country eating meatballs and gherkins for breakfast at 02.00 in the morning? No, we can't say we have either but in June this year, Madeline from Criterium found herself doing precisely that in the epic Vatternrundnan 300km race in Sweden. Check out our blog of this truly incredible event.

Paul recently spent a wonderful day on the Isle of Arran on a 'recce' for the forthcoming Arran Sportive. It was a stunning day weather wise and not only did he have a great ride, he even managed to bag a couple of rather nice pics! Check out his blog of the ride round Arran. It's a cracker!

A magnificent Tour de France came to an end at the weekend with a hugely deserved and popular triumph for Geraint Thomas. In our final blog of this year's race, we look at the backgrounds of both riders and compare the public's reaction to Thomas winning to that of Chris Froome.
We'd love to know what you think. Do you have a different opinion?

Trail hitter: Trek Fuel EX..........
We have just built this pretty epic Trek Fuel EX8 for a very lucky customer.
Based on the 2018 Fuel EX8 29er XT spec, it was already a bike that has everything even the most fussy trail rider would want!
... However, not wishing to stop at standard, this customer rides a lot and wanted to enhance the bike for long distance rides in the hills.
Firstly the wheels. One of the the best ways to promote efficiency, is to upgrade the wheels to a pair of light, wide and stiff carbon wheels. In this case we used the excellent Bontrager Line Pro 30. With its ultra light and stiff OCLV carbon rim and Bontrager hubs that feature a rear free hub with the fastest engagement we have ever seen!!! These wheels will accelerate very quickly. Set up tubeless with the excellent Bontrager XR4 team issue tyres, this combination will suit the light and stiff alloy frame very well indeed.
Carrying on with the carbon theme, a set of Bontrager Line Pro Carbon bars fitted with Bontrager ergo grips will reduce vibration through the cockpit for fatigue free long rides.
Zefal supplied the front and rear mudguards and Shimano the XT trail pedals complete the upgrade kit.
Net effect is a brilliant trail bike that will climb, contour and descend with equally great effect.
In our opinion, the Trek Fuel EX range equips you with one of the best made and responsive trail bikes on sale today.
For more information on this incredible range of bikes, come and speak to us in store.

Chapeau G!
Many congrats to Geraint Thomas, a worthy and hugely popular winner of the 2018 Tour de France. The likeable Welshman, so often the support act, has finally, and deservedly, won the biggest prize in the sport.
Congrats also to Chris Froome, 3rd in this year's race and who selflessly supported his colleague and friend once it became clear he didn't have the legs to challenge after his heroics in the Giro d'Italia.
... A great day for British Cycling. Well done 'G'!

If you've been following the TV coverage of Tour de France, you can't fail to have heard just how much difference sitting on someone's wheel makes whilst they do the work. But how much difference does it make? The answer is an awful lot - check out a blog we did 2 years ago explaining the physics of drafting.

Lap around Arran.........
Wow wow wow wow wow!!!!
What a stunning place Arran is.
... We will be writing a full blog piece on this excellent day of riding and our experience of what works and does not work when doing a day trip to the island.
This blog will be in our Great Rides section of our website blog in the next week or so.
Have a look at these photos and take a trip to www.criteriumcycles.co.uk to see other great rides blogs.
This ride was probably my best time on the bike in years!!!

Arran: Scotland in miniature.......
Paul and Rosie have decided to have their summer holiday on Arran. Well, when we say summer holiday, it is actually 24hours to do a recce for the forthcoming Arran Sportive in September.
Arran has a road circumscribing the island and is approx 52 miles long with around 1,300m of climbing. The big hill in the photo is Goat Fell and is Arran's highest point.
... We catch the ferry at 9:45am, so better get some breakfast!!!
Photos on the route will appear through the course of the day.
Stay tuned!!!!

The personal touch........
We posted some build pictures of this Bianchi customer build last weekend, emphasising our Criterium Cycles personalisation program.
We also promised to put up some photos of the completed bike with a full upgrade spec.
... So here you go......It is finished!!!
The bike started life as an already fabulous Bianchi Oltre XR.3 Potenza spec in the Gloss Celeste paint scheme.
As part of this customers initial sizing assessment, it was clear that the standard length 120mm stem was going to be too long for the riders current flexibility and core stability. We took the opportunity to upgrade the stem to a 100mm Cinelli Neos Carbon ........really nice!
Then together, we decided to upgrade the handlebar to the quite amazing Bontrager Pro Iso Core Carbon. What makes this bar so amazing is the vibration absorbing central core that lies within the carbon laminate. It massively reduces the fatiguing harmonic vibrations that we all suffer on our roads. Bontrager Supertack bar tape finishes the cockpit area of the bike.
Onto the wheel upgrade. For the second time in recent weeks, we have gone with the Deda SL38 in the dark graphics for this bike. Unlike the Domane SL5 we featured recently with the red/white graphics that tied in perfectly with the frame, we wanted to mute the wheels and let the frame colour pop. Combined with the Anthracite side walls on the Vittoria Open Corsa tyres, we think it looks stunning!! What do you think??? Let us know in the comments.
Finally, a set of Bianchi Carbon cages in Gloss Celeste finishes this beautiful build.
To say the customer was blown away with the detail was an understatement.
We will be adding this build to our ever growing portfolio section of our new website: www.criteriumcycles.co.uk
If you are wanting a new bike that is personal to you, fitted to you and is different to what everyone else is riding, Criterium Cycles is your perfect choice.

Like one of Baldrick's plans, just a lot better
So Alpe d'Huez showed that it is really Geraint Thomas who is now Sky's heir apparent? Actually, we don't think so. Check out our blog to see why. Careful though - it might be a bit controversial......!

User

Follow the Leader (but which one....?)
A fascinating Stage ended in the first mountain finish at La Rosiere and saw Geraint Thomas grab stage victory and yellow with Chris Froome up to 2nd in GC. Has that created tension at the top of Team Sky or is it all just a clever ruse? We have a view. Check out our blog and see if you agree.

Stage 9 - the Hell of the North

Personalisation at Criterium Cycles.......
There are many ways to buy a bike; however, at Criterium Cycles we believe that there is only one way.....personalised to you!!!
For this reason, we talk to you about what you need from your bike, what you want from your bike and how we can improve your cycling experience. Remember, it is a hobby after all and your free time is very precious.
... Pictured is a fantastic representation of a bike that is having the full Criterium Cycles treatment.
It is a Bianchi Oltre XR.3 with Capagnolo Potenza, which by its own rights is a fantastic bike.
Personalisation comes with the following aspects taken into account.
1, Bike fit: Ensures all aspects of the bikes components are a perfect fit for you
2, Comfort: This step takes basic components fitted to off the peg bikes and adds to the general comfort of the bike to help reduce fatigue
3, Performance: The most obvious one that changes selected components to help increase the performance of the bike. This could be by reducing weight, increasing aerodynamic efficiency and changes in gearing.
All these steps are to ensure that you have the very best experience on your new bike.
Stay tuned for more pictures and a full specification of this excellent build.

The Fred Whitton Challenge
Ever wondered what the route of Britain's toughest cycling sportive is actually like to ride? Wonder no more. Paul, Bob and Steve gave it a go recently and it pretty nearly broke them. Check out our latest blog of their attempt (and please do remember to comment, like and share if you feel able to as we always appreciate feedback!)

User

Stages 3 & 4
Welcome to the latest instalment of our occasional blog on the Tour de France. Bit more of stage report this one. We'll aim for something a bit more contentious once we hit the hills!

Fred Whitton Challenge route; A recalibration of what ‘tough’ actually is!!!......
On Sunday 8th June 2018, Bob, Steve and Paul decided to take on the quoted ‘Toughest UK Sportive Route in the UK’ the Fred Whitton.
There are many really tough sportive routes in the UK and a number we still wish to do. However, the Fred Whitton has been on the bucket list for a good few years.
... We will be writing a full blog piece to go on our new website www.criteriumcycles.co.uk in the next few days, which will feature our do’s and don’t based on our experience. Plus a full run down on kit and recommendations for completing this route.
In the meantime, we thought it would be nice to share some photos of the trip to whet your appetite.
Please be sure to write any questions in the comments, so we can answer them in the blog piece.
What a great day in the saddle.......

Do check out our blogs on the Tour de France. We can't profess to be the most informed (we are over here rather than over there for instance) but that's never stopped us having an opinion or 3..... Here's our take on Stage 2 (and looking forward to the TTT)

Went for a bike fit with Paul after suffering leg cramps, lower back pain and really sore shoulders and neck on a new bike purchased elsewhere. On arrival there was a much needed coffee and a relaxed chat about the process and expectations. I learnt a lot about how I had got my fit wrong and how and why the opposite of what I expected actually worked. New bike fit sorted without drama or rush. Kettle stayed warm and I discovered that new bars (supplied and fitted) would really help the neck and shoulders. All fitted and I admit, it felt a little strange on the Turbo. Rode the bike 25 miles yesterday and 45 today. Wow! No aches, no pains, noticabley more power and no cramps! I picked up 25 PB's on Strava over the two rides, with a sprinkle of 2nds and 3rds. Early days, but I am now a firm believer in bike fitting. Some people may think It's expensive, but it's included if you buy a bike from Criterium (over a certain value) and if not, why suffer when you work out the cost as a price per mile?? Definitely recommended. Thanks everyone involved.

Visited the shop today for some advice on some mountain bike stuff, just stsrting out again after not owning a bike in 20 years, could not be happier, guy I spoke with was great, feel a bit more confident starting out again

User

Took advantage of the Winter Bike Check promotion for my old commuter bike, knowing that it was due a service, definitely needed new brake pads and probably could do with a new chain. You won't believe what they tried to sell me. A service, brake pads and a chain! No "you could do with replacing this" or "it might last a bit longer but..."! Then spent 10 mins chatting through options for service, plans, price and what you get for your money, without an underlying agenda or hard sell. Then they did the work immediately. What more could you want? Wet and windy commute in this morning but the bike was smooth and silent. Very happy and will use Criterium again. Only problem is I can't blame my ageing bike for me being slow anymore as it's running like new!

User

Phoned today regarding tools. The person on the phone was a great help. Very knowledgable and professional. On going to the shop, i was greeted by a very professional and friendly member of staff. With in minutes i had what i was looking for and wasn't pushed into or pressured to buy. The staff were eager to help and answered some queries i had. Without a doubt the most friendly, professional shop i have been in and i will not be going anywhere else. This will now be my go to place for all my cycling needs. Thank you again for a great service.

User

Outstanding service! Tried to source the correct aero seat post for my Trek TT bike without much luck, after speaking to Paul and sending some measurements and pics via email, he identified the correct one, ordered it directly from holland then shipped to me. Had a lot of time to speak to me and understand what I was needing, despite not knowing if I would order via them and having never shopped with them before. Absolutely delighted, truly first class customer service.

User

New bike day today 1000 times better than new car day. Thanks to Paul, Keith and Rosie at Criterium Cycles for a very friendly and first class service.

Looking for a bike shop with friendly staff, incredible product knowledge, attention to detail and a willingness to look after you post-purchase?

Stop looking now and go to Criterium Cycles. Paul and the team offer first-class all round service, streets ahead of everywhere else.

Just bought a bike for hubbys Christmas and could not be happier with the service and advice given from the first visit to the shop. Confident staff who know what they are talking about and do not push you into things you don't need. Thank you to all the staff for making buying a bike a breeze. And for spending the time to fit the bike correctly for my husband. We have bought a few road bikes in the past and have never had the high class standard service we had this time.

User

If you are into any form of cycling then Criterium Cycles is the only place you need to visit. I just had bike fittings on two separate road bikes and now really really wish I had visited Criterium before I bought any of my bikes (purchased before I heard about this shop). Paul and his team offer an exceptional level of service and first class knowledge and I for one will definitely be returning... Thank you for such a pleasant and educational experience.

User

I have nothing but good things to say about this cycle shop. I've used Criterium Cycles for the past 2 years and with the friendliness and knowledge of Paul and his team this cycle shop is hard to beat. If you are looking for a new bike, bike clothing or honest advice this is where to go.

User

I bought a Bianchi Intenso Dama Bianca from Criterium Cycles. Which included a full bike fit. Wow what service, first class. Lovely bike which has been adjusted to fit me perfectly. Attention to detail and customer service is exceptional. Great to see staff who are passionate and knowledgable about the bikes and associated equipment they stock. Impresssive! This is the place to go for a new bike. Well done and thank you to you all.

I am doing a 600 mile cycle in 6 days in October from Arlington Cemetery, Washington to Syracuse University, New York. Our aim is to honour those lost in 1988 from Pan Am flight 103, in the air and on the ground in Lockerbie. There are 5 of us taking part, also aiming to support those affected then and since. We will raise funds for Mental health charities.

I knew I needed some expert help to find the right machine and the right fit. I don’t believe I could have done any better than to find Criterium Cycles. I now have a wonderful bike, fitted perfectly for me. You will not find better products or (more importantly) better service and personal attention to detail than Criterium.

Our venture may appear on TV (or not, depending on news events at the time). If so, please note the Trek Domane SLS I am using is bought from Criterium. I am incredibly grateful for their advice and expertise. In truth, I wouldn’t manage the event otherwise.

User

I am absolutely thrilled with my Neko electric bike. I got it at the beginning of July and have used it a lot. I rarely went on my bike before as I struggled with distance and hills. The Neko gives me the confidence to go anywhere on my bike knowing I will be able to climb the hills back home. You still need to work but it just gives you the help you need especially on hills. The service from Paul at Criterium Cycles was first class. He was very informative but not pushy at all. Fantastic bike. Would recommend the bike and Criterium to everyone.

User

Great place for advice and customer service.

I’d recommend professional bike fit.

User

First time visiting Criterium Cycles yesterday, decided I wanted to upgrade my road bike and had settled on a Bianchi. Paul, Rosie and Keith made me feel very welcome and comfortable, tried out the bike to see how I would fit to it. Their knowledge is outstanding, they went through everything with me, positioning, comfort, pedals, shoes, the dynamics of the bike, wheels, frame. I learnt so much yesterday and hence I will be the owner of a new Bianchi very soon. Highly recommended these guys, so if you are unsure of what you need, just go see them, you won't be disappointed

Cracking first commute from East Lothian to Edinburgh on my new steed from @CriteriumCycles this morning. Paul and the team couldn't have been more helpful, adding some custom splashes to a already great piece of kit. 3rd bike purchased from @CriteriumCycles over last 4/5 years and every one has been bang on. Would highly recommend.

User

Bought my new trail bike from criterium. Keith and Paul were amazing and really know their stuff. Can't recommend criterium and the staff highly enough!

User

Awesome technical knowledge and passion for cycling, without the often pushy nature you find in some shops. Have bought a whole series of bikes for me and my wife, plus various bits and pieces. Would thoroughly recommend them!

User

Attended Criterium for a Bike fit on my Trek Madone which I bought 2nd hand without measuring up or anything. Paul was fantastic. Very welcoming, extremely knowledgeable and professional with an attentive eye for detail and getting it just right. I top of that I have ordered the necessary parts I require for my needs and second appointment made for when bike is complete. Only thing I would say is despite the full fit being a fantastic service on your current bike, save yourself (and Paul) some time and just get fitted for your new bike and buy with them. Will most definitely be going back for my future bike needs be it adjustments, services or indeed the new bike when it is time. A+ service.

User

A+ service.

User

User

User

Looking for a bike shop with friendly staff, incredible product knowledge, attention to detail and a willingness to look after you post-purchase?

Stop looking now and go to Criterium Cycles. Paul and the team offer first-class all round service, streets ahead of everywhere else.

User
