About Cromarty Woodturning

Cromarty Woodturning Description

Jim Pennie is a local wood turner from the small village of Cromarty on the Black Isle in the north east of Scotland. He specialises in lamps, candle sticks and bowls but is ever up for a challenge and will take commisions on also.

Here are a couple of pictures of a base I have just completed. I had an idea and saw it through to completion, although I’m not sure what I think of it. It was a lot of work. Sometimes when you set out to do something you have never seen anyone do before, there is a reason why it hasn’t been done. Love to hear what my followers think

I would first like to thank everyone for their kind posts and comments about the lamps in Souters Creek, They were all appreciated very much. This post is a series of pictures showing the process of making the lamps. I know this will not interest everyone,
Wood was supplied by Woodworkz, at Loch Carron, in Wester Ross. If anyone has any questions about the process I'm happy to answer your questions

Over the months of January and February I was busy but unable to post about it. Reason was I was working with a local restaurant, Souters Creek, on a design and make project for new lighting and was asked not to post anything till they reopened. They are now opened so here are pictures of the finished lamps. In a couple of days I will post a series of photos of the build process for those that are interested.

As you may or may not know, a lot of the wood I use is sourced from the waste bins of other woodworkers, and was on its way to the firewood shed. I always take all that's put aside for me, and of course I ended up with a lot of nice thin slabs of wood which I was unable to put on the lathe. So, rather than waste this I have started another small enterprise, Wooden boards. This involves taking all the thinner slabs of wood I had and making one of chopping boards/serving boards/ charcuterie boards. If this is of any interest I have started a facebook page to show what I am making, called, "Woodenboards" Here are some pictures of some of the boards I have already made.

Its been a while since the last time I posted but I have not been idle. I have been busy with a couple of commissions, which I have to keep quiet about for another week and then I can post the pictures of what I have been up to. However yesterday I bought a bag of offcuts from the local recycling pages and in amongst the bits was a small block of Indian rosewood which I have never worked with before so I made this little dips bowl.

Let's just put up this give away now. It's simple, one winner will get to choose one of the items I have posted pictures of. To enter simply like, comment on which of the items you would like to win, and share with your friends. Entries will close at midnight on Sunday 16th December to allow time for me to get the winners postal details and send the item off. Good luck

Thats the last craft fair done and dusted, and now it's time for the Christmas giveaway. I intend to do the same as last year, post up pictures of 3 or 4 items and the winner can choose. I intend to post the pictures and what you have to do be in tomorrow, and draw a winner in time to post out to arrive for Christmas.

It's the first craft fair of the season, Eden court 1, at, you guessed it, Eden Court, Inverness. I will be there Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Come along and have a look, and say hello in passing. Usual range of lamps, candle sticks, bowls and wands.

Sometimes you just have to make a big mess, and then tidy up.

First today is a bowl made from rhododendron wood. Its unusual to get this wood in large pieces. This wood came from a specimen tree grown in Attadale Gardens in Wester Ross, and was reckoned to be about 120 years old. Just something a little different, and quite attractive. But, much more exciting, the first batch of wands for this year. And of course each wand has a cavity for a Phoenix feather, dragons heart string, or whatever else you feel it might need

User

woodturning post this time. I don't make a lot of bowls, but sometimes you just look at a piece of wood and realise it would be wasted to do anything else. So three bowls, one in olive wood and the other two in spalted beech. All turned beautifully.

User

Nothing to do with woodturning, just the locals showing off.
