About Cultybraggan Camp

Owned by the community of Comrie, a multi-use site for commercial businesses, a valued community resource, public and private events space and a unique Heritage visitor experience.

Cultybraggan Camp Description

Initially built as a working camp for Italian Prisoners of War, Cultybraggan Camp (Camp 21) eventually housed over 4000 German Prisoners. Due to its remote location, many of those Nazis who were deemed to pose the greatest threat to Britain were incarcerated on the site. Indeed, the Camp became known nationally as 'Nazi 2' ('Nazi 1' was at Watten in England). Hess, Hitler's right hand man, was even interred at the Camp for a short period of time after his capture and before he was transferred to London for trial.
Since the war, Cultybraggan Camp was in use as a military training camp, offering summer camps, adventure training and firing ranges to everyone from 12 year old cadets to paratroopers returning from tours in Borneo or Ireland. There are lots of fascinating stories from this period and we would love to hear yours too.
In 2004, the site was de-militarised. In order to prevent the camp being knocked down and replaced with housing, Comrie decided, as a community, to purchase the land. It is now a growing community enterprise and resource. Over 30 allotments have been producing delicious veg and many individuals and businesses are moving into buildings on site with plans for careful restoration. An exhibition in Hut 1 (the first hut on the left as you enter) contains more information about the past and future of the camp. This will feed into our longer-term plans to upgrade the Cell Block to become a multi-purpose space promoting the heritage of Cultybraggan Camp and Comrie.
A major project to restore 11 buildings for use as Self-Catering Huts is well underway. Funding was secured late in 2016 and after much development work we will begin a renovation and upgrade project in 2018, availability booking dates and further information coming soon.
If you are interested in becoming involved in the project in any way (time, skills, information, artefacts, donations) please get in touch; anything you think you may have to offer would be gratefully accepted!
