Does your pet eat a lot but seems to be losing weight? Do they drink too much water? Are they more lethargic and depressed? If you have seen these, your pet might have Diabetes Mellitus! While this disease has slightly different causes and progression between cats and dogs, it’s always caused by an issue in insulin production and/or usage by the organism. Insulin regulates how our body uses carbohydrates, fats and proteins. When insulin stops being produced or when organs are... resistant to it, glucose in the bloodstream starts to increase. Without treatment, glucose will build-up to such levels that organs will be damaged by it. When diabetes mellitus becomes severely decompensated, it’s a medical emergency! This puts your pet at risk of liver, kidney or heart failure, as well as cerebral oedema which can cause life-threatening coma. Diabetes is a serious disease, if you think your pet might have it we can help you! Just give us a call on 01847 89 2387 (Thurso) or 01955 602088 (Wick).

Antifreeze is commonly used to melt the ice on the windscreens of our cars and in car engines as well. Now that the temperatures have dropped it is important to remind owners that antifreeze can be very dangerous for pets. The liquid is poisonous as it contains ethylene glycol, a substance that is toxic for our furry companions. Consuming even a small amount can be fatal. The symptoms of antifreeze poisoning can occur after 30 minutes or even after 12 hours of its ingestion a...nd include lack of coordination, vomiting, lethargy, depression, increased thirst and urination. This winter please take preventive measures to avoid any accidents. Keep your antifreeze in sealed containers, away from the household pets, and please check your car regularly for any water coolant spills. This liquid is usually sweet-tasting which can be appealing for some pets. Cats can also ingest it when they groom, if they get some of the liquid on their coat. If you think your pet may have ingested antifreeze contact us immediately!

A happy Bonfire Night, everyone! As the hour of the fireworks draws near, we would like to remind all owners that pets might not enjoy them quite as much. If your furry friend isn’t so keen on seeing the fireworks as we are, there are a couple of simple things you can provide that will make them feel better. Create a safe spot for them, like with their cage with heavy blankets over it, let them stay inside the house for the duration or let them have access to the quietest room in the house. Close windows, curtains and doors and put music loud enough to mask some of the sounds. Walk your dog before sun fall and keep them inside the house when fireworks are likely to start. There are also pheromones or special jackets you can buy that help calm your pet down during this stressful time. We hope everyone has a great time tonight!

Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is a common over the counter drug that most of us have around the house to treat fever and mild pain. Some owners might be tempted to use them on their pets in an attempt to help them when they are sick, but unfortunately, even a small amount of paracetamol (even just a bit of a tablet) has severe toxic effects on your cats. They can't use their liver to metabolise it, and it may even cause liver failure. If ingested, they may show si...gns of depression, rapid breathing, vomiting, salivation, and abdominal pain a couple of hours after ingestion and it may be fatal in under two days. If you suspect there is any chance your cats could have come in contact with paracetamol, bring them in immediately! Please never give paracetamol to your cats, and never let them play with or chew on anything that could have paracetamol.

Is your puppy/dog this relaxed when he or she comes for a visit? :)

Dogs, just like us, use sound as a way to communicate to each other and ourselves. However, excessive barking can be an inconvenience and result from an underlying situation that needs to be addressed. If you feel your dog is barking more than he or she should, we’re here to help you!

Did you know that hyperthyroidism is the most common endocrine disease in cats? This is especially true for middle age cats who seem to be the ones who suffer the most from this condition as it is uncommon in cats younger than 6 years. Fortunately, it's most often caused by a nodule in the thyroid that unilaterally decided to start producing a lot more thyroid hormone than needed. Only about 1% of all hyperthyroidism issues are caused by thyroid cancer! Because it’s most like...ly not cancer, it’s much easier to manage. If you start to notice your golden oldie is losing a lot of weight, seems disoriented or anxious, is having difficulty breathing, is eating a lot or has bouts of vomiting and diarrhoea, bring them in and we can give them a thorough check. The sooner this condition is treated, the sooner your feline friend can start feeling better!
