Thank you to Euro’s owner who brought this fabulous cake to the hospital after his safe return home! It is truly a work of art and was delicious! Thank you!
It is with great sadness that we let the Dick Vet community know that Velvet our teaching horse has passed away.
Velvet joined the teaching herd more than 20 years ago and in that time has taught thousands of students, from vet to nurses, masters students to art classes. She also taught horse owners and the public at client events and courses and featured in posters, articles and banners for the vet school.
Velvet was dependable, patient and understanding and was a firm fav...ourite amongst nervous or inexperienced students. That’s not to say she was a push over and didn’t tolerate fools gladly. Velvet was the matriarch of the teaching herd and taught the younger members of the herd what teaching life was all about. She also taught them about trekking along the A701 in the early hours of the morning and making the most of the summer holiday teaching break by consuming as much grass as horsely possible.
Velvet meant different things to different people but to us all was worth her weight in gold. Thank you for everything Velvet and rest assured your legacy lives on in the rest of the teaching herd and in the thousands of students you have helped along in their lives.

The loss of a patient is always tough and all the more so when it’s such a special pony. JM did an incredible job with the Drum RDA and has touched the lives of so many leaving behind a legacy of smiles and memories. He will be sorely missed by the riders, volunteers, staff and other horses at the Drum RDA. Out thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.
We welcomed volunteers from the Equine Grass SIckness Fund for a tour of the Equine Hospital on Monday. They do amazing work to fund research into the disease and promotion of its awareness - well done!
Get well soon Oreo!
Today is World Mental Health Day and this picture is a particularly poignant reminder of the role horses have in our lives. We would urge everybody, vets, clients, colleagues, friends and strangers to make yourselves aware of the help out there and to support each other through small acts of kindness. #bekind

It's that time of year again......!
Storm Ali may be upon us but rain and a mild autumn means our regional laminitis risk is still very present. Here’s a useful guide to spotting the early signs of laminitis from the British Horse Society. Obesity remains the biggest risk factor for the development of this painful condition so act now and get that weight off!
Happy Birthday to our fabulous receptionist, Jess! To our shame, she baked her own cake, but we did at least help her to eat it!
OK , this one might be more difficult: which member of the equine hospital team is this, in years gone by? And for the real XC connoisseurs, which event?!
Feel better soon Jazz!
The rain recently has meant a flush in grass and consequently weight gain by our horses and ponies. Ravelrig RDA have defied this trend and have managed to get a good amount of weight off Tonto: he’s a work in progress but he goes to prove that with exercise and sensible grazing practices safe weight loss is achievable! WELL DONE RAVELRIG!! 🎊 😃 🐴
Its been a record year at the Dick Vet Equine Hospital for fractures, with a greater number and range than we've had before, perhaps its due to the hard ground after our wonderful summer? So far we've generally had great success, and we thought you might like to see whats involved, so here's a wee treat for you. In this video Dick Vet Equine Surgeon Dr Eugenio Cillan-Garcia fixes a fracture with the horse standing and sedated. We do this because it reduces the risks for the horse. We've speeded it up so you can see the whole process...enjoy
Starter for 10....... who is this vet with her first ever pony, Jamaica Joe (and a very rare sight in a pink skirt!)? And the bonus - which livery yard is this?
Would highly recommend the dick vets to anyone, especially Louise couldn't of asked for a better vet to be there when my horse was poorly.
Tried everything possible to save my mare. They were great with her right until her last breaths. Very kind and compassionate. Made my gelding who came in as a companion for cherry very welcome also ❤ thank u
They saved two of my horses from surgical colic's and diagnosed and operated on my other horses leg that had a bad tendon injury. The vets and nurses are just incredible and their knowledge is completely off the scale.
Thank you to Professor Dixon and his team for looking after Therapy Ponies, Mickey and Flicker today. Leaving your precious little ones for surgery is always a worry, but no need for concern when they are left in such capable hands. Amazingly caring and professional. Thank you again, from Therapy Ponies Scotland. X
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to Ollie & Team for giving Solway a chance at a pain free life. Your amazing people and what you do is phenomenal
Thank you for your care and attention while my boy was in hospital receiving investigations and surgery to help with his recovery. You allowed me to visit him, kept me update and also took the time out to explain what was happening. Thank you again from Emma and Asniona
Stan my pony is still in the Dick vets recovering after life saving surgery for colic. He wouldn't be here today if the team of vets and nurses hadn't done such an amazing job. I can't wait to get my boy home and can't thank everyone enough for saving his life.
Just got my horse Darci back after being there for a week she really put them to the test trying to work out why she was lame but they got a diagnosis in the end. Amazing team of vets and grooms looking after her and keeping me informed with what was going on. Will see you again in 6 weeks hopefully with some improvement.
I cant thank the staff enough for the care my horse aldo received when he was in, from his visit to the yard from Chris and tess to the excellent care from Francesca and Robyn not forgetting all the student vets, nurses, grooms and reception staff....thank you
I can't thank Louise enough for her support & care over the last week or so. Thomas my 21yr old pony has been through so much lately and the care Louise has given him has been exceptional. It was also great to meet two of the students who Thomas enjoyed lots of TLC from as well as helping towards their studies.
Francesca & Scott saved our 5 months old filly foal‘s life with excellent diagnosis, treatment and hopefully towards a full recovery. More than that everybody who medicated the foal or dealt with her mum did it in such a way that both of them were reassured, confident and remained just as loving as they were before their visit to Dick‘s vet was necessary. The day I met vet Francesca she was standing in their loose box explaining our foal‘s condition while being nuzzled by her.
We are super thankful that our filly foal still has a future and can only very highly recommend the Royal Dick’s veterinary school.
THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!!!
Excellent service, everything explained and re-explained when needed! My mare has received excellent treatment and care and hopefully on the road to recovery. Thank you from me and Connie
Can't thank all the wonderful staff at the Dick Vet enough after they saved my horse's life. My exracehorse Nico presented with a serious heart condition and now he is doing extremely well and thoroughly enjoying his retirement.
Can't thank Tess and her team enough for all her help over the past couple of months. Wouldn't of been able to cope with all the stress if it wasn't for Tess telling me everything would be fine! Many thanks once again
Can't thank Richard and his team enough for giving my yearling a shot at a comfortable and happy life. We arrived totally defeated after failed treatment after failed treatment from other vets. We can't thank you enough
Brilliant . Took care of my horse , quickly identifying the best course of treatment . Although I didn’t want to leave her , I left happy that she was in good hands . Came highly recommended from all my horsey friends too . Thank you
Amazing vets and thank you to all that helped been brilliant every step of the way I can't thank you enough for getting jay home
Amazing people thank you to all that treated my horse Tilly when she was there. She got a tooth out & sinus flush and then didn't want to come home. Wouldn't hesitate to contact them with any queries or problems. Thank you to vet John for regular updates on procedures & treatment. Makes a big difference when the surgeon who is treating your animals calls you.
Absolutely great evening. So glad I made the effort to attend with my daughter Estera , who is hoping for a career in Equine Vet Nursing. Fantastic to know we have such superb facilities so close in case of emergencies. Thank you to the organisers and staff for showing us round.
