About Dilley Dalley Books Independent Children’S Book Retailer

The reason I chose to become an Independent Usborne Books Organiser is written in this short article. I believe strongly that children from birth should be read to, not just at bedtime but during the day. it is not just to show love for that child but also to teach them words, colours, numbers and of course they love the story. I was brought up with books everywhere in our house and my children are the same. so Usborne is not just about selling books its about that Childs future and capabilities. I believe Usborne books are very special for children from their early books to the teenager non fiction and novels.

THE IMPORTANCE OF CHILDREN LEARNING VOCABULARY THROUGH READING

To succeed in school and beyond, children need to build a robust vocabulary. Children learn a lot from adults in their lives and there are many ways you can help your child learn new words.

When trying to teach your children words, don't try to choose too many words at one time and not too few, a rule of thumb is to choose 5 unfamiliar new words for your child to learn each week. Typically a child needs to hear a new word 4 to 12 times before it is added to their vocabulary. As you are teaching your child new words it is important to help visualise them, for nouns show your child a picture of it in a book.

READ IT, SAY IT, WRITE IT.

Books are the number one way to expose children to a richer vocabulary. As often as possible, read books with your child, when they come to a word that they don't know, give your child a quick friendly definition and then carry on reading.

Vocabulary development is a process by which people acquire words. Babbling moves towards meaningful speech, as infants grow and produce their first words around the age of 1 year.

Pictures in books support 2 memory techniques - association and visualisation. Associating an image with a word helps a user learn words in a more effective way. Memory plays an important role in vocabulary development.

The phonology of words has proven to be beneficial to vocabulary development when children begin school. Once children have developed a vocabulary they utilise the sounds that they already know to learn new words. The phonological loop encodes, maintains and manipulates speech based information that a child encounters. Memory capabilities increase with age and gives them the ability to learn more complex vocabulary.
