Discovery Point And Rrs Discovery

About Discovery Point And Rrs Discovery

Discovery Point is home to RRS Discovery.
This award-winning visitor attraction tells the story of the Discovery, from her beginnings in Dundee, her amazing first Antarctic expedition and her voyages thereafter.

Last admission is 1 hour before closing, however we recommend at least 1. 5 - 2 hours for your visit.

Transport directions and car parking
By road

Dundee’s waterfront is growing developing all the time. Foxlake Dundee, Water's Edge Dundee, Apex Hotels, V&A Dundee Slessor Gardens, Sleeperz Hotels and more. Exciting times! Shout when you see Discovery!

Shared by (and featuring) one of our Front of House team, this photo was taken exactly 29 years ago today! We love seeing peoples photos of them and the Discovery throughout the years, do you have any you would like to share with us? #DiscoveryDundee #MadeInDundee

Fresh Perspectives. You get an entirely fresh perspective on the scale and size of Discovery from the base of the dock. The skill of the shipbuilders of over one hundred years ago is jaw-droppingly impressive. Restoration work now complete and it’s soon time to fill the dock! 🌊 #discoverydundee #madeindundee #visitdundee

It has been a grey and cloudy Tuesday here in Dundee but seeing water pumped into the dock really can brighten any day! #DiscoveryDundee #MadeInDundee

One picture taken in 1901 the other taken in 2018. As beautiful now as she ever was!

Last school year thousands took part in our award winning education programmes and we look forward to welcoming many more this year. Scottish Instagrammer IanGBlack visited the city and Discovery Point and RRS Discovery today and with the dock currently dry (but not for long!) took the opportunity to get some super images and video to share #visitdundee #discoverydundee #madeindundee

There have been a huge number of books written about the heroic age of exploration but for me Captain Scott's "The Voyage of the Discovery" is the always top of the list! For #BookLoversDay tell us what your favourite polar or ship related book is.

Continuing our #FridayFilm series showing Discovery through the years with this brilliant light-hearted look at the history of the Sea Scouts and the many skills its members can acquire. See if you can spot the moment they use a stage set instead of the real Discovery! The original Description to the film stated "'The Sea Scouts carry on Britain’s seafaring tradition, and Captain Scott’s famous command ‘DISCOVERY’ is their training ship. In addition to Scout Law, they learn... wireless telegraphy, navigation, swimming and life-saving, and the meaning of discipline, team work, resourcefulness. They thus become good scouts, good seamen and good citizens."

Not only do we have twenty-seven(!) Siberian huskies visiting this coming Sunday, we also have a whole range of other activities going on - including the chance to win tickets to the wonderful Highland Wildlife Park, Kincraig. Just last year, the Highland Wildlife Park welcomed Hamish to their polar bear family - and we're sure you'll agree that he's an absolute cutie!

We are enjoying a fantastic busy day here with lots of families exploring all things Discovery. With the car park at peak demand the following alternatives are only a short distance from us: - Greenmarket Multi Storey Car Park, Dundee, DD1 4QB - Gellatly St, Dundee, DD1 3RB Both car parks are multi story and should have ample parking space available.

User

#OTD 1970. #BlackTotDay was the last day the daily rum ration (the daily tot) was issued by the Royal Navy. In our collections we have the silver tot that belonged to Discovery crew member Gilbert Scott. We also have the grog tub from on board Discovery on permanent display at Discovery Point!

User

A great weekend guide for anyone looking #VisitDundee - of course featuring the world famous #RRSDiscovery!

User

Oh no! The summer holidays are coming to an end but don't worry, there's still one more Summer at the Ship session! Book your place for The Final Frontier where we'll be exploring the link between the RRS Discovery and space exploration!

User

Worth a visit and a very interesting display of artefacts. Lots of information. Impressed that the ticket can be turned into an annual pass making it possible to revisit. Also impressed that you can buy a discounted ticket covering both the Discovery and the Verdant Works.

User

Whenever I visit Dundee, I go here. It is profound to learn about, stunning to look at, and awe inspiring to explore every nook and cranny this gorgeous ship has. I would seriously move to Dundee and visit the ship weekly I love it that much and don't shut up about it to my friends.

I got to sit in the Captain's chair, ring the bell and and learned so much about what ship life was like. Cannot brag about this place enough. Can't thank all the wonderful staff and volunteers enough for the wonderful experience they provide. Keep up the amazing work!

User

Well laid out museum. Many exhibits and videos to explain the ships history. I was especially pleased that much of the ship was accessible. The only issue is that those with mobility issues will find the lower decks hard to access, though to be fair a sign warns of these issues. Also to be fair the remedy borders between the very expensive and impossible. Finally the cafe had a good range of food choices.

User

We had an absolutely brilliant time at discovery point. We had our 11 and 15 year old and they loved it. There was so much to do and to see. It was really great learning all about the discovery and even more exciting to go in the shop, it made everything so real. There were also lots of fun activities to do like brass rubbings

and designing a flag which we emailed home , treasure trail and quiz that got the kids looking for things and answering questions . The staff were really friendly too. We are in the cafe which was reasonably priced- the portions were great and the food was delicious. Great day out and the bonus is, we were given a year pass meaning we can go back as many times as we want for the next year and get in for free. We will be back soon

User

Very informative and in a location that is improving daily , our first visit in many years , but won’t be our last .

User

Really interesting and Educational time spent here at this museum.Enjoyed it

User

Our party varied in age from 70 to 7. There was something for everyone in each of the rooms in the exhibition. A beautiful building with interesting displays and good interactive activities for children. We had a headset which we shared. This gave us excellent insights into life on board the Discovery.

I'm sure once the current building work is completed, this will be a star attraction on the waterfront in Dundee.

User

My fiancé and I visited yesterday. The exhibit is very interesting and highly fascinating. The centre is well laid out and we felt like pirates on the ship. It was a bit chilly but probably nowhere near as cold as Antarctica! Will definitely recommend to others!

User

Great; but you need to change the signs on the doors. We watched at least a dozen people in a number of groups, walk up to the doors and walk away again before the doors opened. I'm sure most just read the top line of the notice saying you were closed for renovations. I don't think any read on to the bit about half price entry and normal hours during those renovations.

User

Great day out ,very interesting to hear about the ship and its crew before during and after its journey to the Antactic .

User

Fascinating and well presented history with absolutely fantastic staff. Looking forward to going again.

User

Enjoyed our visit here yesterday. Staff very friendly and helpful. Finding out about the Discovery and Captain Scott’s expeditions was so interesting . Defo will be back. Xx

User

A really well thought out exhibition with plenty of interesting and interactive activities to keep everyone’s attention. It was great fun going on board the Discovery, really enjoyed it all. Cafe is great too!

User

We were passing through Dundee yesterday and stopped at Discovery Point for a look at the V&A being built. We decided to have a light lunch at the cafe at Discovery Point. It had a wide choice of food and the service was excellent . We had previously visited the ship some time ago and enjoyed the experience but didn't have time to do so on this visit.

A lovely location.

User

We travelled from Lanark so arrived around 1.30 on Sunday. Both boys enjoyed it very much. There were lots of interactive items to keep them amused. They thoroughly enjoyed the Discovery and loved exploring it. There were only two points that could be improved. The film in the theatre there was a 19 minute wait between viewings. As the the venue was quite I felt this could be improved. So we did not get to see it. When we finished the tour I asked one of the assistants where the nearest McDonalds was as the boys were hungry. They gave me directions. I then noticed there was cafe and asked if they sold sandwiches etc? They did. I bought lunch boxes for the boys which had a good selection for them to choose from. I ordered my coffee and sandwich only to be told they stop serving food at 2.30pm. It was now 2.45pm . So my only choice was cakes. As I am trying to lose weight. I had to decline. I feel that even if they were able to have sandwiches available until you closed the venue.

User

We driven past the Discovery several times, finally paid a visit, exhibitions are well laid out and informative, the ship it’s self is very accessible. Good pint is the ticket option allows you to visit other Dundee museums.

User

Very interesting and an impressive ship. The cafe had a varied menu to suit all tastes. Most of the cafe staff were friendly however one in particular needs to mind her language in the kitchen! The staff in reception were really friendly and helpful. The exhibition was really informative but perhaps too much the younger visitors to take in. More interactive features are always good - my son loved the camera on the mast. The shop was your typical museum wares. However it was missing your typical pens and pencils which is what we were looking for. Overall good value for money - especially when using Tesco day out vouchers!

User

Interesting museum and in particular interesting story!

User

Enough to entertain two adults. Varied means of information about the YS through to RRS Discovery and made meaningful to locals. Dundee was 'freezing' so we didn't loiter on board but worth taking time to explore. I cannot imagine how cold Antarctica is!! Recommend to all, Dundonians and visitors.
