Thanks for dropping by. These are my doodles.
Its taken me forty years to find something that i could happily spend every waking hour doing for the rest of my life. These doodles are it.
Follow them from pencil sketch to finished digital art. Check out my website for other creative output and some of my own thinking about my work.
Sketches are progressively being made available as digital lineart for printing and colouring. The first few are available for free with additional and future pages available to Patreon patrons for $1 a month. https://www. patreon.com/doodlemandrill.
I'm looking to produce a wide range of products from my work, including colouring books. Like and follow to be kept updated with new sketches, finished lineart, and product launches.

This one is done.
Still not convinced, but as experiments go I learned a lot and will be putting that to use elsewhere. Still thinking about the next one and sorting out guidelines but will be looking to start that one in the next day or two.
My website was down as I couldn't afford the hosting. It's back for now, but please consider buying a print from my shop. It's getting to the stage where I need my art to start paying it's way before I lose heart and give up. The link is... in my bio.
Three a5 prints will pay for a month of hosting. Not much else mind, but 8 need the hosting to sell the art.

Nearly there. Should be done this today and starting on the next one. Would it be considered a breach of rule 1 to put down a few pencil guidelines? They're going to be obliterated by the pen or otherwise erased, so I say no. And they're my rules 😛

More #doodlebook #dotwork. Am quite enjoying the process of creating this. It's very organic as I watch the forms emerge from a few dots to the thousands seen here. I already have a rough direction for the next one, but still have more to do here before moving on.
Are pencil guidelines, to be erased or obscured in the finished piece, to be considered a breach of rule 1? I'll have to consider it.

Page 1 of the new sketchbook has begun. I have an idea of where this will end up and it will likely blend onto the second page as I'm starting on the left had side. The previous page, after the frontispiece, is a spacer and doesn't open fully due to the way the frontispiece is glued. Suits me as I means I'll have a full spread of two pages to play with. The book opens reasonably flat at the moment, but we'll see how that changes as I work my way through it.
This was done on my train journey this morning, about 30 mins work. Not finished.

Finally got some more done on the current #a3 piece. And the second pic is the frontispiece of my new #leuchtturm1917 #sketchbook. You'll note the rules I've given myself for filling this one: Rule 1: #stabilo #point88 Only. Rule 2: fill/finish one page before moving on to the next. Rule 3: both sides. Rule 4: Words and pictures. Time to add some context and what _my_ interpretation, or thoughts in the moment, might be. There's a story I need to tell. I just need to figure ou...t how. Rule 5: 3 colours per page max.
Addendum: Rule 6: there are no mistakes.
This is the plan. Let's see how long I can stick to it. You'll note the absence of a time limit for 'finishing' a page. This is deliberate.

Didn't get much done over the weekend.
Bought a new sketchbook. A #leuchtturm1917. I've got some rules for it too. I'll be introducing those once I've finished the first page. I'm feeling more ready to mix things up a bit and start trying to create something coherent. Watch this space.
Got a bit more stippling done on the cracked sunburst doodle. Its slow going though, and the other geometric design is something I'm playing with as well. Not sure where it's going though.

No work on the #a3 last night but here's something I've been doodling with my dead stabilo point 88 while at work. It's still good for stippling, but no use for linework any more. It may well have been the stippling that killed it...
Going to keep working on this concept though. Getting into the habit of working directly in pen, from sketch to final piece. It's an interesting shift in my process...

Made some headway on the detailing last night, and spotted interesting shapes while waiting for my train to pull in.
I'm filling in the parts I'm more certain of to begin with, while what the rest wants to do solidifies. Globes and tubes next I think.

I spent last night staring at this and playing videogames (Just Cause 4 and Monster Hunter World, fir anyone interested). I want to be certain before I start in on texturing and shading so want to have a more concrete vision of the end result in my mind. I'm obviously nervous of the next stage, procrastinating, and should just get on with it. This is just as much part of the process as actually drawing, staring at what you've done and visualising the finished product.

Scribbled some words this morning. A statement of intent. More for myself than as a proclamation for others. I laid out with precision the general particulars of something I've been wanting to make headway on for a while, and identified something I need to do which should achieve some of that aim.
