Visit Dunblane Museum during July for a special exhibition about Dunblane’s simulated Atlantic Wall on Sheriffmuir used in preparations for the 1944 World War II D-Day landing of 155,000 Allied troops on beaches of Normandy to break through the Atlantic Wall on the European coast in the largest amphibious military operation in history. Did you know Dunblane Museum itself is a museum piece as it was built in 1624. It was built for James Pearson who was Dean of Dunblane Cathedral as his town house. It retains its barrel vaulted ceilings in the lower entrance rooms. Visitor comments often include things like "it's like a Tardis" as it's much bigger inside than it looks outside. Why not explore today - it's free and open Monday to Saturday 10.30am-4.30pm

#OnThisDay 1782 the 1747 Act of Proscription that banned the wearing of tartan in Scotland was repealed. The earliest known illustration of Dunblane tartan is in an 18th century portrait in Hornby Castle, Yorkshire (a copy of which is in Dunblane Museum) of Viscount Dunblane

It’s #InternationalFairyDay today. Robert Kirk (1644 – 1692) was a minister, Gaelic scholar and folklorist, best known as author of "The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies" a treatise on fairy folklore. Robert was born in Aberfoyle, then in the Presbytery of Dunblane which provided him with a bursary to study theology at St Andrews University from where he graduated in 1664 as a Doctor of Divinity, at the age of 20. Kirk's collection of supernatural tales has been described as one of the most important and significant works on the subject of fairies and has been republished on many occasions.

It’s #InternationalFairyDay today. In 1911 Dunblane's Faery Bridge was built, but its name isn’t anything to do with fairies. It’s an early example of a precast ferro-concrete bridge ("faery" coming from "ferro") - replacing a previous wooden structure connecting to the Springbank Mill. #FairyDay

#OnThisDay 1314 the first day of the Battle of Bannockburn took place - Dunblane Cathedral's Precentor, Maurice, was chaplain to the Scottish soldiers under Robert the Bruce, giving words of encouragement to the soldiers prior to the beginning of the battle. Maurice became Bishop of Dunblane Cathedral and is commemorated in the war memorial stained glass window in the Chapter House of Dunblane Cathedral.
