East & Central Sutherland Citizens Advice Bureau

We provide free, impartial and confidential advice to anyone who requires it in East & Central Sutherland. Advice areas include benefits, debt, employment, housing, consumer immigration and utilities – we are able to offer advice on most areas and signpost to organisations when we can't. We recruit and train volunteers as generalist advisers and various other roles and have specialists in Welfare Rights, Money Advice /Debt and Housing. We help to shape social policy in Scotland. We offer drop in and appointment sessions across our catchment, telephone and email advice and home visits. We work closely with local and national organisations (local council, development trusts, NHS) to make and receive referrals. We help clients who are in crisis and have no food and no money by giving food parcels and helping them to apply for sources of financial help as well as finding out why clients have reached this situation and helping them to prevent reaching it again. We help bereaved people to sort out estates left after a death. We help expectant parents to prepare for their change in circumstances through benefit checks, housing applications and checking their employment entitlements. We recruit and train volunteer generalist advisers who undergo a robust training programme which consists of a mixture of online and face to face training as well as shadowing and learning from existing advisers and specialists. We currently have 5 regular generalist advisers who between them provide between 24 and 48 hours of their time per week to help our clients. All CABs in Scotland are independent and there is a common misconception that we are all linked; we are all individual businesses and charities and are not linked but do work closely with each other when appropriate. We all adhere to the 12 Principles of Citizens Advice Scotland and work under their guidance.
