Rent in Edinburgh is bloody expensive. Throw into that letting agencies charging illegal fees, landlords running off with your deposit, far-from-sufficient student finance — it can often be hard to feed yourself. Let alone house yourself. Let alone live!

In Edinburgh we are also facing a significant shortage in student housing, which the University chronically fails to address. Across Britain tenants are exploring a number of methods to deal with dodgy landlords, rocketing rents, unfair contracts, and cuts to housing benefits. Amongst them are tenant’s unions, which aim to share information on shoddy letting agencies and landlords and to facilitate collective resistance. Housing co-operatives form one part of the solution in this wider struggle.

A housing co-operative is housing collectively owned and democratically run by its residents. Successful co-operatives are built on the foundations of democracy, equality, and solidarity — fostering innovation and community. By cutting out profiteering landlords they can knock a significant chunk off the rent in the process.

Beyond cheap housing, co-operatives provide something that most halls lack: Community. The co-op depends on collective responsibility, working together, and mutual aid. By working together everyone quickly gets to know each other — building strong social ties, friendships and support structures.

Housing co-operatives do not solve the underlying economic issues entrenching class division and driving inequality. However they can strengthen movements for change and can provide a glimpse into potential methods of organising a fairer, more participatory and sustainable economic system than contemporary capitalism.

Suicide Safer London is a London-based organization. They have offered Edinburgh Student Housing Cooperative to train up to 32 people (divided up in 2 groups of 16 each trained by one expert) for free. They have also encouraged us to invite external groups, like Edinburgh Universities and Colleges. Uni of Edi, H-Watt, and SRUC will be present for sure. Still waiting to hear from Napier and Edinburgh College. You may find a full description of the training day here: http://www....suicidesaferlondon.org.uk/s fa-suicide-first-aid
Every participant has the option to get accredited for £85. You may decide on the day whether you want to get assessed for certification. That would be the only cost for attending the training, which is otherwise free.
Due to this being a rare opportunity, Suicide Safer London has asked us to reserve places with the condition that, if not attended, the course will cost you £50. We will be charging the sum in case you couldn’t attend and didn’t notify us early enough to find a replacement for you. You should let us know by Tuesday 29th.
The event is likely going to be hosted by SRUC, Scotland's Rural College.
Here is a program for the day. For a more detailed one, follow the link above:
30th of May, location TBC
Part 1: 9.30am – 11.00am
