European Bioinformatics Institute (Embl-Ebi) Description

We provide freely available data and services to the life science community, covering everything from nucleotide sequences to molecular interactions and whole systems. We are part of EMBL, and our research teams focus on computational biology. Our training programme offers courses on site, online and at host institutions throughout the world, serving researchers working in academia and companies of all sizes. www. ebi. ac. uk

"In the PDBe Art project, I’m not always teaching science formally or in a traditional way. To me, the art students involved don’t need to understand what an amino acid is, but to understand that we are built of proteins and that they are relevant to our everyday life. I tell them how, when they take some medicine, it does something to a protein in their body," Alice Clark, Scientific Database Curator at EMBL-EBI.

Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models have exploded in popularity over the past decade and are beginning to supplant other techniques for modelling cancer in research and drug development. But what are the limitations of these models? Our colleague Nathalie Conte, PDX Finder Project Lead, talks to Nature News and Comment about PDX Finder, an exciting new tool for cancer research and drug development www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-05890- 8 #drugdiscovery #cancerresearch

Don't miss the last few days of Protein Data Bank in Europe (PDBe)'s art exhibit at Michaelhouse Café in Cambridge. “Working with the students, seeing what captures their imagination and observing their artworks develop over the course of the past year has been a truly inspiring experience,” says David Armstrong, Outreach and Training Coordinator at PDBe. https://www.ebi.ac.uk/about/news/announce ments/2018-PDBe-art

Why are food scientists around the world trying to understand the genomics of essential crops, such as wheat, rice and maize? Feeding a growing global population can be a challenge. To support this aim, the International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium has released its latest wheat genome assembly in Ensembl Plants. https://www.ebi.ac.uk/…/a…/new-wheat- genome-assembly-ensembl

Preprints are an excellent way of communicating research results fast. To help researchers get a better view of existing research Europe PMC will be adding preprints to its search alongside peer reviewed research articles. Tempted to explore the new feature yet?

Acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) is an aggressive blood cancer that affects people of all ages. Our recent Nature paper with Sanger Institute and other collaborators discovered that it is possible to identify people at high risk of developing AML years before diagnosis.

“By integrating complex genomic data into our analysis, we have gained new insights into how the human T-cell leukaemia virus works. In turn, this could help us understand why certain patients experience such devastating symptoms, while others are asymptomatic,” Ewan Birney, Director of EMBL-EBI, talking about his recent eLife paper in collaboration with Imperial College London. https://www.ebi.ac.uk/…/cancer-causing- virus-htlv-1-changes…

“Our method allows researchers to do something that couldn’t be done before – to easily integrate complex molecular data from DNA, RNA, methylation and more to build a tumour’s molecular profile. Using these profiles, the method can also stratify patients into groups that may benefit from different types of treatment,” explains Ricard Argelaguet, Predoctoral Fellow at EMBL-EBI.

Our researchers compared genetic data from mice with data from gorillas, to show how mouse data could help identify essential genes for development in mammals, such as the cheetah, polar bear, wolf, panda and cattle. “The traditional diagnostic pathway for #tuberculosis (TB) is slow and expensive. There is an urgent need for rapid screening and diagnosis of drug-resistant TB. Our work in Madagascar can pave the way for similar projects in other countries where TB has a huge human and economic impact," Zamin Iqbal, Research Group Leader at EMBL-EBI. https://www.ebi.ac.uk/…/fighting-drug-r esistant-tuberculosi…
