Fairy Pools

About Fairy Pools

Free to visit at any time, the spectacular Fairy Pools are located near the village of Carbost in Glenbrittle on the Isle of Skye.

Fairy Pools Description

The Fairy Pools are located at the foot of the Black Cuillin, a world famous range of mountains on the Isle of Skye. Mainly composed of basalt and gabbro, it is from the dark colour of the gabbro that the Black Cuillin derives its name. The summits of the Cuillin are bare rock, jagged in outline and with steep cliffs and deep cut corries and gullies. All twelve Munros on Skye are Black Cuillin peaks except for Blaven which belongs to a group of outliers separated from the main ridge by Glen Sligachan. The highest point of the Black Cuillin is Sgùrr Alasdair at 992m (3, 255ft). At the heart of The Cuillin lies one of Britain's most famous corrie’s, Loch Coruisk, a deep and forbidding body of water. It has inspired countless artists such as William Turner and Sir Walter Scott who described them after his visit in 1814: ‘We were now under the western termination of the high mountains of Cuillin, whose weather-beaten and serrated peaks we had admired at a distance from Dunvegan. They sunk here upon the sea, but with the same bold and peremptory aspect which their distant appearance indicated. They seemed to consist of precipitous sheets of naked rock, down which torrents were leaping in a hundred lines of foam. The tops, apparently inaccessible to human foot, were rent and split into the most tremendous pinnacles: towards the base of these bare and precipitous crags the ground, enriched by the soil washed away from them, is verdant and productive. User

When you come to the Fairy Pools and if you feel like a coffee, there is no better place than the Cuillin Coffee cafe at Glenbrittle Campsite just two miles down the road 😊

The Fairy Pools are becoming even more popular with visitors so when you make your visit, please be careful on the single track roads, follow the parking notices and take your litter away with you.
Since the start of 2016, the MacLeod Estate has been working with the Minginish Community Hall Association, Highland Council, Forest Enterprise Scotland and the Glenbrittle community towards making long term improvements to the visitor and parking facilities at the iconic Fairy Po...ols at the foot of the Cuillin. Fairy Pools welcomed around 100,000 visitors in 2017 which does create challenges for small rural communities that rely on narrow single track roads for access and vital deliveries. So please do not park your vehicle irresponsibly. There is a WC at the nearby Glenbrittle Campsite along with some great coffee and snacks.
Enjoy your visit!

A magical place of myth and clan MacLeod legend.

User

Wonderful place, great views and definitely worth the visit. As others have said, make sure you wear sensible clothes (your brand new white Nikes won't look so great, as I spotted one poor soul while visiting, if you step off the path!!!). Only real disappointments were the inconsiderate people parking on the road, and the dog poo bags spotted along the pathway (sadly seen throughout Scotland these days) - if you're gonna pick it up, put it in the bin!

User

What a beautiful place, Lovely walk, but elderly people or disabled may find it a challenge. well worth going to see the beautiful pools, waterfalls and mountains, You can even take a dip in the pool if you wish :)

User

We didn't hike the whole way, but the fairy pools we saw were absolutely amazing and worth the steep trail. We enjoyed the beautiful drive there and back.

User

This place is worth a visit, wear sensible shoes and a water proof coat, the walk from the car park is a gradual climb with a couple of steppping stone streams and some uneven ground, it's worth it for the water falls and the view

User

Stunning scenery; a great day out, ideal for hikers and photographers. The walk is easily achieved by anyone of average fitness but keep an eye on very young children as there are some steep drops onto rocks below.

User

No matter what the weather and believe me we've been in brilliant warm sunshine and wind and rain coming down in rods this is a magical area and we keep going back as there's always something to see in a different light. Wonderful! ⛅

User

Nice place to visit. Beautiful landscape. The best of the 3 walks we made in the Island. But the whole Island is a must. ✅😊

User

Magical place! Just a shame some people think it's ok to pitch their ugly tents right next to it, ruining the views for people who have travelled hours/days to see it 🤔

User

Magic, pure magic, see for yourselves. Loads to see on Isle of Skye. This place I love the most.

User

Great hike in the rugged hills of Skye. It's a little tricky to get to the car park but it's well worth the drive and the 2.5 or more mile roundtrip hike. The pools are beautiful and worth the extra effort.

User

Beautiful and stunning scenery. Our first visit was in November it was very wet but very atmospheric. Also visited in glorious sunshine, we spent the whole day there. Plan to go back again. If possible go early in day or late on as it a very popular tourist attraction and car parking can be an issue.

User

An impressive natural experience. Best to take a packed lunch/water as there are no facilities in the immediate area.

User

A fairytale like place :D

User

A beautiful place below foreboding Cullin! Walk can be tricky in places if you are not steady on your feet but if you take it alow it is definately worth it!

User

Its a great place to see but not with kids under 5 years old.

Loads of up hill walk required upto to 2 miles.

User

Beautiful scenery but it was a wet & windy day & the walk was a bit of a struggle. Would love to return on a sunny day, it'd be stunning .

User

A truly magical place but so popular now it is very busy. Go very early or late. Please do not join the many other people who park inappropriately on the verges and in the passing places. If the car park is full try again later. People live and work here so blocking the road is totally wrong.

User

There are new signs reminding people NOT to STOP and

NOT to PARK on the verges at the side of the road or the passing places.

Please ONLY park in the Car Park.

If the car park is full, continue on to the Glenbrittle SYHA building, park there and view the waterfalls there.

Or go early in the day or letter in the day to avoid the crowds.

User

The fairy pools are not for those without good mobility and require jumping across rocky, wet and wide streams in places. The pools themselves are of interest, but I really believe there are many better hikes on the Isles of Skye, such as Neist Point, the Quaring or Old Man of Store
