Salmon viewing platform, forest walks, children's play park, cafe and gift shop. Large parking area, NO OVERNIGHT PARKING.

Falls Of Shin Visitor Attraction Description

Falls of Shin has returned to the North of Scotland, under the ownership of community-led charity group Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust. After fire destroyed the previous building and site in 2013 we are delighted to be open again with a brand new cafe, gift shop and lots of new, fun activities on site for all of the family.

In May 2013 the old Falls of Shin building burnt down leaving nothing but the original slab. Following this tragic event and several months of Stakeholder meetings and planning the Project was invited by Big Lottery Fund Scotland to submit a Stage 2 Growing Community Assets Application for funding under the new ownership.

Valerie Houston was employed by the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust as Project Officer, and worked with the community, stakeholders (Highlands and Islands Enterprise The Highland Council Forestry Commission Scotland VisitScotland Kyle of Sutherland Fisheries Trust ) and Design Team (CH Architecture and WSD Scotland Ltd) to lead the Project to submitting the Stage 2 Application in November 2015.

Funding applications were also submitted to Highlands and Islands Enterprise, The Highland Council Forestry Commission Scotland and SSE Achany Community Funds. In March 2016 we had the majority of the funding in place for the Project with the final piece being confirmed in May.

The Project welcomed back Valerie Houston as Implementation Manager, and Sasha Hudekova as Project Officer (part time on FoSCP and part time on Ardgay Regeneration Project) in June 2016.

William Gray Construction were appointed as the main contractor and work commenced on rebuilding, shortly after locally based Catering 1864 were confirmed as the new operator for the cafe and gift shop. In May 2017, almost 4 years to the day of the fire, Falls of Shin was reopened by the Kyle of Sutherland Development Trust. You can now visit our brand new attraction in the Heart of Sutherland and go to the viewing platform to take in the leaping salmon, take in some woodland walks or have a spot of lunch in our cafe.

we have just eaten at the Falls of shin visitor centre, lovely food and huge potions, we tried but neither of us could clear the plate, very good quality and reasonable prices. staff were very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was spotless clean, top marks from Tina and Tony. x

User

We have been several times now. Always have a lovely welcome from staff. Food good, with a good choice, also a specials boards with several choices. Good choice of drinks, soups and cakes etc., In a great location.

User

Was there today with friends up from Cornwall, we could not have received a warmer welcome, we had such a lovely time food fantastic recommend bacon roll chips and onion rings, but most of all a huge thank you to the lady and young chap on duty, you will make that place a success thank you we will be back.

User

Very impressed with the place and had a great experience. We had a 4 hour drive ahead of us and this made for a lovely stop to stretch our legs and get something to eat. The food was delicious, the service great and very much appreciated that they welcome dogs! There's plenty of parking and picnic tables to enjoy lunch outside and lots of space for kids/dogs to run around. It's highly likely this will be our scheduled stop in future for our trips to the Highlands.

User

Very impressed after two visits recently. First was coffee with a friend and staff put two Comfy chairs by the stove for us. Lovely cake and friendly service. Second was with family for tea and cake - both delicious! PS like the stock in the wee shop too.

User

Stopped by this lunchtime at the rebuilt Shin Falls. Although busy the eating area was airy and spacious. Food portions were hearty and the standard was simply excellent. A special mention for the chips which were the best I have ever eaten in a cafe or restaurant. Proper home cooked and delicious. Staff were attentive and a slight mix up on my food order was corrected quickly with no fuss. Looking forward to our next visit - so pleased this fab attraction on our doorstep has been given a new lease of Iife.

User

Lovely visit to Falls of Shin today, food great and the staff are so friendly, extra bonus that they allow dogs in the restaurant (and they get biscuits !), we will be back

User

Lovely coffee and scone while the car recharged. Great to see the support for Electric Vehicles.

User

I had the privilege of being in the new cafe and shop at Falls of Shin today before it opens! It looks absolutely stunning!! You won't be disappointed and what views on the way from Inverness! It will be a great family day out with a play park, mini golf, retail therapy and a locally sourced produce in the restaurant! 5

User

Have just spent a week staying up at the Falls of Shin. Amazing to see the transformation of the new visitor centre. The park is awesome. My wee boy loved it and played there every day and by torchlight at night! Salmon tail looks fab at night all lit up! Wish visitors would use the bins provided tho and bin their rubbish and not leave their poo bags dotted around the walks! People have worked so hard to make this place look so awesome again. Please do your bit to keep it that way! Great job folks!

User

Had a lovely lunch here, good lunch menu and also reasonably priced food, its good that there is a nice venue here again, great that it is dog friendly too.

User

Great food, nice and clean, gorgeous building, amazing scenery, easy-going walks. What's not to like?

A number of people seem to be comparing it negatively with the old facilities (even likening the new building to a chicken shed?) but I feel it's an exciting new project, with a great community focus. That is the kind of enterprise that is needed locally - not money disappearing into a billionaire's back pocket!

Whilst acknowledging the really difficult terrain they've clearly tried to improve disabled access to the viewing platform by removing the steps and making it all dirt ramps. However, this has not been the greatest success as the turns for wheelchairs are too tight and the ramps very steep. For that I'd probably delete half a star,

User

Brilliant place. Lots of space for parking and for kids to run around. Salmon jumping is just amazing. And the food was excellent. Great value for top notch grub

User

Another great fish and chips yesterday from you thank you falls of shin

User

Went there with the family, we were over the moon dogs were allowed in. The food was superb, fish bites macaroni with haggis and chips were lovely. The only down side was there was only 2 high chairs available which at the start was stressful. Food value friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness were brilliant!! We will be back

Took a run out with my Dad on a Sunday afternoon. Lovely day. Nice new building in a lovely setting. We Had a cuppa tea and a scone in the cafe.Very nice but quite expensive at £10 for 2 scones and 2 cups of tea. Shop is very small and also expensive.Nice grounds for children to play and tables for people wanting to take a picnic. All in all an enjoyable visit.

User

Visited the Falls of Shin restaurant today and received a nice welcome even though they seemed short staffed (tables not cleared ). Coffee was lovely, never purchased any food. We would have perhaps purchased some cakes as they looked lovely however as they were out on display at the till point, at the perfect height for germs and not covered we decided against it.

User

Beautiful day to visit the falls today.... Gorgeous place with what looks like so much to explore now ! ... Only down side was that now the path has been redone and the steps have gone .... It's a very steep hill down to the falls, wasn't very good for my mum who's had a stroke and my 72 year old grandma ... But beautiful none the less :)

User

Visited today, very disappointed. The fish and chips were very nice, though it wasn't haddock ?pollack. I was shocked to find the ice cream pavilion was closed for business at 2pm . Beautiful day and lots of people around. However the salmon leaping didn't disappoint.
