Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training: Young People
About the SMHFA: YP course
This course is a 14 hour evidence-based blended learning course for adults who support young people between the ages of 11-17. ... The course does not train people to be mental health workers. It offers basic general information about mental health problems. The knowledge and understanding developed in the course should help to remove the stigma and fear to give participants confidence in approaching a young person in distress. Mental Health First Aid is an initial response to distress and all participants on the course understand that this help is given only until other suitable professional help can be found.
Who should take this course? This training is designed for anyone who is interested in supporting young people (Aged 11-17) with mental health issues.
What will you learn on the course? Participants will gain an increased knowledge and awareness of mental health issues, as well as improved confidence in: • developing the ability to detect problems at an early stage • reducing the stigma round mental health issues • helping young people to recognise problems • providing guidance and immediate assistance to a young person in crisis
The course does not train you to become a counsellor or mental health professional. It is designed to help you gain a better understand of mental health and how it affects young people, as well as to learn mental health first aid skills such as:
• how to recognise the signs of mental health problems or distress • how to ask about mental distress • how to provide initial support • how to guide a young person towards appropriate help The course also aims to demonstrate how mental health first aid can be applied in a crisis situation involving a common range of mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, self-harm, suicide and substance misuse.
Who will deliver this course?
The sessions will be led by Alison Ebbitt of the Family Mediation Practice. Alison is a skilled mediator and trainer and has been involved in this new training module since its inception. Alison has many years’ experience as a nurse and as a mental health social worker and she is passionate about the need to recognise how mental health impacts on the lives of young people. She is recognised as a knowledgeable and empathic trainer in many fields and is renowned for her interactive style of delivery and her ability to engage participants in active learning. Alison is also part of the national training team for the Scottish mental health training programme.
Course Cost £100

User

Wow, what a fantastic and in depth course! Got so much out of this today, even went home and showed my family CPR! Michael really knows his stuff and takes time to make sure you really understand first aid. Thanks again and also thank you for helping me sort out my back problem. Thoroughly enjoyed the 1 day lesson. Feeling confident that I could handle things in an emergency cheers

User

Very professional and confident training, run through all the scenario's required for the course. Very enjoyable, hands-on, and practical way to refresh first aid.

User

Very enjoyable, a hands-on and practical way to teach first aid for a novice first aider like me, I took a lot out of it. Mike's teaching is relaxed and not overloaded with powerpoint slides but a get on the ground and run through all the scenario's required for the course.

User

This is the best first aid course i have ever been on! Teacher was great and explained everything in depth with us. We even managed a few laughs couldn’t recommend this course enough.

User

Recently was on a first aid course with Michael, excellent training and trainer,so much experience, completely different in many ways from just a trained first aider taking course, the knowledge and experience he has comes over with so much confidence,he is very happy to explain things easily and with great detail so if you are not medically trained you can understand it better. Fantastic course love to go onto next level, thanks Michael.

My daughter Anna aged 5 just attended Michaels Mini Medics course on 20th Jan 18. She loved it. I enrolled her after her witnessing her grandparents being run over on Christmas Day. Seeing the sheer panic I hoped a course like this would better prepare her for blood & bone injuries of at the very least ensure she stays calm & can call 999. It taught her so much more. She can tell me how many breaths & chest compressions for an adult, child & baby. Can tell me what to do if it looks like someone has had a reaction to nuts, fish etc & how to administer the pen. Countless other life saving techniques at 5! Would highly recommend. It’s a small financial sum to potentially save a life.

User

My 15 year old and her friend attended the mini medics first aid training on Sunday. Both girls thoroughly enjoyed it. Michael ran the course very proffesionaly and made sure that it was delivered at an age appropriate level. I would recommend any one with young children to sign up and learn some first aid you never know when it may come in handy. Thanks again Michael for a first class service.

User

My 13yr old daughter Aśka attended the Mini Medics course in Stenton today and absolutely loved it - she is wanting to go into Nursing and this was a great starting point for her. Michael really encouraged her and has given us many pointers to help her in her future career. Will definitely be back for refresher courses - thank you.

User

Michael visited us at ZooLab today and was absolutely fantastic. I personally learned a lot of amazingly useful information on the course which can only help if anything ill-fated is ever to occur. Would definitely recommend to anyone interested in learning more about first aid! Cheers

User

Michael visited our workplace at ZooLab today and it was a pleasure having him.

The course content was fantastic and having kids of my own I really learned lots from him.

Hopefully this doesn’t come into play but I do feel confident now that if needed I have the knowledge required.

As for Michael himself, he made the training fun, factual, relevant and loved his first hand experiences.

User

Just done a 2 day refresher course with Michael Braid. He brought his experiences in to the classroom giving our group a good variety of examples of different scenarios for each area we went over. I have done many 1st aid courses over the years and didn't go into as much detail in those as I just have. Mike took the group through at a pace good for everyone, threw in a few jokes and quips. Very enjoyable for this type of course would recommend Mike for any 1st aid courses

User

Just completed three day First Aid training with Michael. It's the most interesting and helpful training I've had. Michael has a wealth of experience and knowledge and is approachable and friendly, making the information accessible and giving useful feedback. I've enjoyed every minute and feel comfortable and confident in my new role. Highly recommended! Thanks, Michael

User

Just attended Level 6 Emergency First Aid and Active First Aid courses today with Michael from Fife First Aid Training. Course content was excellent and the active course was especially useful as our son races motorbikes so great to have knowledge of spinal, head and chest injuries as well as broken bones (will hopefully never be needed though!)

Very friendly and relaxed environment to learn. Thank you, will definitely attend the course again when I need a refresher.

User

I think I can talk for all of us on this weeks first aid training. Michael is a complete star. He explained everything so well we all felt confident with what we were doing. I am sure we will all go forward as confident first aiders and be able to help anyone in any situation with confidence. Thank you Michael.

User

Excellent teaching and trainer, lot of information but surprisingly stuck very well and it really surprised me just how much I knew by the end of it. Would wholeheartedly recommend this course for anyone who's thinking of it; it's accessible, a lot of fun and vital knowledge that may just save a life or two.

User

Excellent emergency first aid at work course delivered by Michael who has a wealth of real world experience. The course was more practical training than theory and was explained simply and with a minimum of medical jargon. Would like to do this course again in 1 year and would recommend Michael to any business looking to train first aiders to any level.

User

Been on courses like this before but this was different. Relaxed and fun environment which enabled me to learn better. Michael was able to teach a serious subject yet allow attendees the chance to learn in a group basis. Michael has the experience and proffesional knowlefge to train to a high standard. I rely on first aid in my job role. Michael was anle to discuss and show me better techniques. Only negative... Michaels jokes, they should have a health warning with them, ha ha.

User

Attended a first aid corse Michael ran, was the best one by far, most interesting and fun all in one, Michael made learning easy and I enjoyed every single minute off it all

User

Attended a course at The Village Hotel, Edinburgh as organised by my work.

Michael is an excellent instructor, could not fault him or the course whatsoever and I'm now grateful I have the knowledge that could potentially save someone's life one day!

Hopefully one day these lessons will become mandatory in schools so that everyone can potentially help in an emergency situation.

Cheers again!!
