The fashion for a tan seems to be going on forever! Why do we believe it makes us more attractive and why are we so desperate for it that weŌĆÖre prepared to put our lives at risk?

Happy National Sunglasses Day, everyone! Yes, it's an actual 'Day' and what a great thing to celebrate! The dreary dullness, high winds and then floods (!!!) from a few days ago have passed and I'm delighted to say that the sun is actually shining a proper warm shine today. So I will be well and truly celebrating and loving my shades! I hope it's sunny enough where you are to get shady, too. ¤śÄ¤ĢČŌśĆ’ĖÅ¤ī×

.......So, 10 years since The Telegraph reported that 4 out of 10 Scots were using chip fat, moisturiser and baby oil instead of suncream, it would seem that in 2019 not much has changed. '.......a large number of British holidaymakers do not take sunburn seriously as a health risk. More than a quarter of those asked said sunburn does not bother them, and some even incorrectly believe it will turn into a tan'.

Chip fat? Really? Well, this article was written 10 years ago so maybe our attitudes have changed a bit since then.
'.........unhealthy sunbathing habits are to blame for Scots having the highest risk of contracting skin cancer in the UK.'

I recently asked how many of you would wear suncream or an SPF moisturiser on a cloudy day. 62% of you said that you would which is fabulous!
Remember, UVA (which ages, tans and is linked to the development of skin cancers) is present ALL YEAR ROUND with EQUAL INTENSITY during daylight hours. It can penetrate glass and cloud (even in Scotland).
I thought I'd share this hack with you to make sure you're covered. ¤śé

Today IŌĆÖm off to find me a manufacturer. Lovely to be in gloriously sunny Islington for Make it British Www.makeitbritish.co.uk

User

Just wondering, would you wear suncream or SPF moisturiser on a cloudy day?

GULP!!! I keep being told I have to do this so......here I am in my first UPF50+, biodegradable sample. What do you think?

Suncream has been getting some pretty bad press recently. ItŌĆÖs killing coral and entering our bloodstream. We MUST use this stuff but maybe we can use less of it and wear more protective clothing.....
What do you think? How do you feel about using suncream?

It's so encouraging to see interest in sustainable fashion slowly moving away from niche towards the mainstream.

I have been tangled up in EU regulations lately, mainly whether or not they apply to FiftyFigs (I now know they do) and what that entails. This I won't know until the end of the month, 3 days before BXXXXX after which it might all change again! I have to say that if it weren't for the melanoma, I might have run out of steam by now! Baby Girl is also FABULOUS at keeping me going. Isn't it strange how things can turn out......So, it's taking a bit longer than I'd hoped but I'm getting there.

So, weŌĆÖve nearly made it through January! How has yours been? While some of us are trying to get away with as much hibernation as possible, others are getting active and out there and heading for the slopes. If this is you, donŌĆÖt forget to pack plenty of broad spectrum suncream. Remember:
Ōśü’ĖÅ 80% of the sunŌĆÖs UV can penetrate cloud cover.
¤Ś╗ UV levels increase by at least 4-5% with every 1000 mts. of altitude (although some put this increase at closer to 10% per 1000 mts.).
... ŌØä’ĖÅ Snow reflects up to 80% of UV so youŌĆÖre getting almost double exposure.
¤æāThe reflected UV is hitting your body from below so donŌĆÖt forget to cover the underside of your nose, chin and backs/edges of ears.
¤æäReapply every couple of hours; snow, wind and nose wiping (inevitable in cold/windy conditions) will help your suncream to wear off. Carry with you a high factor SPF lip balm to keep these areas protected.

******************Brag Alert***************** I was very lucky recently to have had the opportunity to meet fashion royalty, Roland Mouret. We chatted about FiftyFigs, he gave me advice and we have kept in touch. Being a newby in this industry, I am so grateful for his support. https://fiftyfigs.com/blog/today-i-met-ro land-mouret

As we head towards the shortest day, it's hard to believe that, with so little sunlight, there can be any damaging UV rays out there. However, did you know that UVA, (the tanner) which is primarily linked to premature ageing but is also strongly linked to skin cancers, is present with equal intensity all year around during daylight hours? It can penetrate glass and cloud cover. Do you think about sun protection at this time of year?

User

It's been such a busy year! Starting up a business, particularly one in the fashion industry, is a challenge. There are days when it's all coming together and days when it's all falling apart. It is, however, on the whole, coming together. This time last year does feel like a year ago! Usually a year ago feels like yesterday so I appreciate the slowing down of time that comes with newness and variety. This time last year, we were up to our eyes in baking for Harley's second C...hristmas fundraiser for Maggie's and Cancer Research UK. We're missing the smell of Granny's shortbread and the spicy waft of gingerbread coming from the kitchen. I think we'll need to do something about that!
If you're interested and haven't already done so, please sign up to the FiftyFigs mailing list for monthly updates. It's just me keeping you up to date with the journey. Go on! There's a gingerbread man in it for you....
