Our last callout was to Portobello beach on 19/06/19 at 00.30 hrs in relation to a concern for person incident. The person was quickly traced safe and well by the team.
The team have reached 43 callouts so far this year compared to 44 last year, for the entire period. We relate the increase in calls to hard work by our team and management in arranging partnership working with other agencies and emergency services. There has also been work to increase awareness of the coastgua...rd within the wider community.
We always strive to speak to individuals and coastal organisations when out and about, including yacht clubs and coastal residents about water safety etc. Our work continues with local police teams in relation to water safety and partnership working at Portobello beach.
One area we have been involved in is supporting police in searching for missing people, both in a coastal environment but also inland. As a search and rescue organisation, we can quickly supply trained resources to search for the missing vulnerable persons.
We often get asked what we do as a team. These are some of the roles our 8 volunteers are trained to deal with/support:
* help rescue people trapped on the coast, for example on cliffs, stuck in mud or in the water * provide 4x4 all terrain vehicles * search for missing people * report and deal with pollution and other hazards * help emergency services and local authorities, for example during flooding, casualty evacuation etc * gather information for the coastguard operations centre * carry out duties for the Receiver of Wreck, for example dealing with wreckage or dead whales and dolphins on the shoreline.
A big thank you for everyone’s support. As always it’s 999 and ask for Coastguard in a coastal or water emergency.

Sincere thoughts with the family and friends of the three crew members of a French lifeboat who sadly died yesterday, when their lifeboat capsized in severe weather as it went to the aid of a fishing vessel in distress.

The Fisherrow team were at Portobello today assisting at a water safety training event for police officers in North East Edinburgh. The event was being led by our full time Senior Coastal Operation Officers. Also at the training event, helping out with their valuable expertise, were our colleagues at Kinghorn RNLI Lifeboat.
The police officers learned about the roles of HM Coastguard and RNLI lifeboats, and the important work they do in search and rescue. Both organisations ...provided guidance on what to do in a water or coastal emergency, as police officers are often the first responders to an incident. The training included a practical demonstration of Coastguard rescue equipment and officers were able to practice the use of emergency rescue throwlines.
Please check-out the ‘respect the water’ and ‘float to live’ links below. The information could save a life. In a coastal or water emergency, dial 999 and ask for Coastguard.

The team were involved in 4 callouts on yesterday’s public holiday.
