On extremely hot days like today it is increasingly important to control the temperatures and oxygen level in your aquarium or pond!
As water temperatures rise the oxygen levels decrease which can be potentially disastrous!
The addition of an air pump will naturally increase the dissolved oxygen level but will also help in regulating the temperature due to the introduction of the cooler air and increased surface movement.
... Additionally, increasing surface agitation by moving filter outlets towards the surface is also advisable.
If you are dealing with extremely high and hard to control temperatures then small and frequent water changes with cold conditioned water can be used to help reduce temperatures further.

Our little Splash Tetra (Copella arnoldi) have had a very busy weekend of spawning!
This small species of Characin is endemic to South America in river basins such as the Orinoco and Amazon.
You may notice the eggs have been deposited on the glass above the water!! This is where these very agile little fish get their name!
... When breeding the male and female will both jump out of the water and cling to a leaf or other surface overhanging the water using their pelvic fins. At this point the female will deposit a handful of eggs which are immediately fertilised by the male. The pair will then drop back into the water and repeat the process until all eggs (up to 200!) have been deposited!
The male will then guard the eggs for the 36 to 72 hours until they hatch, during which he will jump out of the water up to 38 times AN HOUR to splash the eggs with water to keep them moist!

These fantastic little stone loaches are endemic to Vietnam and only grow to 3.5cm!
Unusually for a loach these little guys are very bold and extremely active! They will spend most of their time in the mid-range of the aquarium!
... They are an ideal addition to smaller aquariums and do well when kept in larger groups!
