We're a (quite) small independent publishing company and children's bookshop founded by author and illustrator Shalla Gray and writer and journalist Jayne Baldwin. We produce high quality children's books with the focus on good storytelling combined with beautiful illustrations. We joined forces in 2013 and so far we have produced
The Quite Big Rock by Alan Grant
Big Bill the Beltie Bull by Shalla Gray
Big Bill's Beltie Bairns by Jayne Baldwin
Big Bill and the Larking Lambs by Jayne Baldwin
The Galloway Chilli by Shalla Gray
Charlotte's Woolly Yarn by Shalla Gray.
Sammy the Rainbow Snail by Alan Grant
Maxwell's Mega Mission by Jayne Baldwin
We aim to support independent booksellers and local business and we are proud to use J and B Print in Newton Stewart for all our printing.
Many of our books celebrate south west Scotland. We were delighted to take over the Box of Frogs bookshop in Wigtown in November 2016

We’ve had to stay tight lipped about this for weeks but now we can tell you that we’ve won a fab award towards publishing the next book by Susi Briggs and Ruthie Redden. We are fair chuffed. ☺️☺️☺️☺️
Another great photo this time from Dandie owner Evžen Gayer who took this shot of her lovely dog Klara reading Mustard &Pepper! These Dandies are such clever dogs 😉.
Just love this picture posted by Kim Davies who bought a copy of our new book Mustard & Pepper. Looks like everyone is enjoying reading it.
Two young customers Tom & Dan from Sutton Coldfield rescued Mr Toad from being flattened on the road outside and released him in the garden behind the shop today.
All stocked up again at Kilnford Farm Shop & Farmhouse Kitchen Cafe with Mustard & Pepper now part of the Curly Tale team. 😃 Also in stock now at Jenny Wren in Castle Douglas and Galloway Lodge Preserves & Coffee Shop
Delighted to welcome local author Hazel Stevens with her new book Poppy is Lost in the Garden. She was joined by her grandchildren Poppy and Lennon.
Join us this afternoon for honey biscuits and a reading from Winnie the Pooh. All welcome at 2.30pm.
And this morning we have Hazel Stevens launching her new picture book with a reading and craft activity at 11.30am.
We had a visit from an adorable Dandie Dinmont today! Bonnie came in with her owner Jane to collect copies of Mustard &Pepper for the Caledonian Dandie Dinmont Terrier Club. Bonnie had a few biscuits and a tummy tickle from the illustrator William Gorman from Will Gorman Art- but don’t get any ideas, we won’t be doing that for everyone!
Our first review for Mustard and Pepper. Many thanks to Andy Kennedy for his kind words about this book. "William Gorman’s watercolour illustrations complement the story well. The illustrations set a great mood and tone for the story — Gorman has a clear skill in capturing animals and he presents the action against the beautifully illustrated landscape of Abbotsford."

Illustrator William Gorman called by today to sign and create a little doodle in some of the copies of Mustard & Pepper.
Artist and illustrator William Gorman popped in to sign copies of Mustard & Pepper. He also created a cute Dandie doodle.
Fanfare please!!! Thanks to our amazing local printer J&BPrint in Newton Stewart our fabulous new book Mustard & Pepper is back. Here’s the lovely author Alasdair Hutton reading from the book. Alasdair is the Voice of the Edinburgh Tattoo - can you tell?
Getting very excited about this book - Shalla’s designed a fab new roller banner.
We were soo excited to meet Wee McDuffy, the cutest Dandie Dinmont pup, when he came in with owner Stephanie Baillie this morning. They had a quick peek at some of the proof illustrations for Mustard & Pepper - that's the final page you can see in the picture. Hopefully McDuffy recognised some of his ancestors!
We are happy (like really, really happy) to announce that the proof of Mustard and Pepper has been given the green light by the author Alasdair Hutton and the illustrator Will Gorman Art this afternoon so the book is now officially at the printer! We hope to have copies in stock by mid July but the book is now listed and available to pre-order from our website. Look out for further information about launch events and competitions.
This is one very excited Dandie Dinmont Terrier 😃. And the reason he’s so excited? The illustrations for Mustard and Pepper are finished (cue wild celebrations at Curly Tale HQ). Many thanks to Will Gorman Art for the sketch 👍. Look out for the launch date.
The bananas and carrots are back in stock! Just saying.
