Forfar Athletic 0 Dumbarton 0
The ‘Loons’ run of eight successive home victories came to an end at Station Park yesterday afternoon in a match which will not live long in the memory of those present.
The blustery conditions certainly did not help but on the day, the display of the home side fell way below the standard the Station Park faithful have come to expect in recent times and without doubt a point apiece was the correct outcome.
... The Athies only troubled Grant Adam in the ‘Sons’ goal on a couple of occasions. The former Station Park custodian had to look sharp in the latter stages of the first half when he threw himself to his right to block a John Baird effort from the edge of the box, then in the second period, he did well to hold a Dale Hilson strike from an acute angle.
At the other end Marc McCallum had one save of note to make to thwart Dom Thomas.
The point allied to results elsewhere in particular Montrose’s excellent win at Methil means that Forfar still require one point to be assured of a play-off spot. They also amazingly moved to within a point of Raith in the fight for second place in the league table, after Stranraer fought back from two down to clinch a 3-2 success at Starks Park with a last minute winner.
Hearty congratulations are in order this morning however to our near neighbours Arbroath who clinched the Championship title and with it promotion to the Championship following their 1-1 draw at Brechin.
‘Loons’ supporters will now be hoping that the ‘Lichties’ will do them a favour when they entertain Raith at Gayfield in a BBC Alba televised fixture next Sunday afternoon.
Twenty four hours earlier Michael Travis and his colleagues will have the opportunity to put the last two Saturday’s performances behind them at Stenhousemuir who are of course fighting for their League 1 lives.
A win over the ‘Warriors’ would obviously put the Athies into second spot at least for 24 hours.
Hopefully the ‘Loons’ support will head to Stirlingshire in reasonable numbers to lend their backing as the players attempt to get over the finishing line for play-off qualification and who knows what could lie beyond?

Murray commits to ‘Loons’ cause
Twenty one year old midfielder Murray Mackintosh is the latest of Jim Weir’s squad to sign a contract extension.
The Kilwinning born player who is just completing his studies at Abertay University was made an offer of a one year contract extension a few weeks back and having taken time to consider his future both within and out with the game put pen to paper following training last night.
... Murray first signed for the ‘Loons’ on an amateur registration back in November, 2015 having been recommended to the club by the youth coaching staff at Kilmarnock following his move to Tayside.
He was awarded his first professional contract within twelve months and is now established as an integral part of the first team squad.
His opportunities in the starting line up have been limited in recent weeks but he has shown his undoubted ability to perform at this level and perhaps beyond on many an occasion, notably on his return to Rugby Park in January.
Murray’s signing means that Manager Jim Weir now has nine of the current squad fixed up at present for the 2019/20 campaign.

Stranraer 2 Forfar Athletic 1
The ‘Loons’ failed to ‘cement’ their end of season play-off spot, despite results elsewhere going their way when they went down 2-1 at Stair Park yesterday afternoon.
Raith’s last gasp equaliser at Ochilview not only spoiled our neighbours championship party, but also meant that Rovers now have a two point lead over the Athies in the race for that all important second place in the league table with four games remaining.
... Stranraer got off to a flyer in yesterday’s contest with an opening goal within sixty seconds. The Forfar defence were caught napping as Joao Victoria slid the ball home from four yards out following a right wing pin point cross.
The visitors however eventually got into their stride and after Brad Spencer had struck the inside of the post, their pressure was rewarded in the 22nd minute when Gary Irvine finished off an excellent move with a crisp strike past Max Currie from 15 yards out.
Forfar had their chances to say the least in a second half, despite both teams at times having difficulty coping with the uneven surface, most notably when Lewis Moore was clean through on goal, only to see his final effort deflected wide of the mark.
The visitors paid the penalty for squandering those opportunities in the 71st minute when Connor McManus lashed the ball high into the net from 12 yards out to restore the relegation threatened home side’s one gaol advantage.
In the closing minutes, the ‘Loons’ came close to salvaging a point when sub Murray MacKintosh’s strike was blocked by Currie, Michael Travis’s follow up clearing the bar.
The result meant a long journey home for all concerned, but onwards and upwards as they say.
It is a return to home ‘soil’ for Jim Weir’s outfit this Saturday, Dumbarton who recorded a 2-1 win over Brechin City yesterday the visitors.
A ninth successive home win for Michael Travis and his colleagues would ensure the much coveted play-off spot, with East Fife and Montrose sitting in fourth and fifth place respectively due to ‘lock horns’ at Links Park.
Let’s hope the home support which has been superb in recent times will like the players be well up for the challenge.

Jim and Dale scoop March Awards
There is double delight for ‘Loons’ fans this morning with the news that Jim Weir and Dale Hilson are the Ladbrokes League 1 Manager and Player of the Month award winners for March.
For Jim it is his second award of the campaign having also been nominated two months back.
... It is a reward for guiding his side to home victories in March over the other three teams filling the top four berths in the league, including of course local rivals Arbroath last Saturday.
Dale is the first member of the Athies squad to win the player award this season.
Throughout the month of March the Station Park fans favourite has been regularly nominated for the SPFL team of the week or the goal of weekend, this most certainly being the case for his screamer last Saturday.
Let’s all hope that Jim is well in contention for another award come the end of April and that Dale and his team mates continue their rich vein of form as the season reaches what is sure to be a tense and exciting climax.
Congratulations to both.
