About Forth Valley Sensory Centre

The Centre, based in Camelon, is a place where people with visual or hearing loss and the wider community can access quality services and advice.

Forth Valley Sensory Centre Description

The Centre was the first of its kind constructed in the UK and specifically developed for the sensory impaired community.

Today, the Centre hosts a number of services and activities, not only for people with a sensory impairment, but also for the wider community. These include: a café serving fair trade coffee, a sensory garden and a sensory room, which are open to all. Businesses can also take advantage of our spacious, flexible meeting rooms which are close to all major transport links.

The overall objective of the Centre, is to help people who have a sensory impairment live as independently as possible. Statutory Social Work services are provided by Falkirk and Stirling Councils while RNIB Scotland and Action on Hearing Loss run a Resource Centre with equipment and advice to help in daily life.

RNIB Scotland also have their Advice Plus information service available for people with a visual impairment. Employment advice and job search coaching is also provided to job-seekers with a sensory impairment.

NHS Forth Valley hold audiology clinics for children and babies and opthalmology clinics and advice in conjunction with Falkirk Council Sensory Impairment Team for all ages. NHS Forth Valley disability team provide guidance and support on health, disability and overall wellbeing as well as interpreting services where required.

Forth Valley Sensory Centre also provides a programme of added value services including a wide range of social groups and activities for people with a sensory impairment.

And the winner is....
N. Ramsey! (we hope)
Today we drew the raffle for the bottle of House of Commons Champagne kindly donated by John McNally MP and the winning ticket is white, numbers 6 to 10.
... The name on the back says N. Ramsay but, no other contact details! Were you at the event? Do you know N. Ramsay? Are you N. Ramsey? If so pop down with some I.D. and we'll present you with your prize!
Please let our winner know if you have any idea who this is. We'd hate them to miss out!
Big thanks to Alex from Falkirk Delivers for being our independent adjudicator and drawing the winner for us!

In addition to the next 'round' of self defence and personal safety classes, David is also launching a new, Martial Arts Style Fitness Class on 18th July.
This is an evening class, starting 5:30pm and finishing at 6:30pm. As a first trial block, this class is free and places are limited.
It is open to all but David has specially adapted the exercises to suit people with sight loss.
... Interested? Get in touch and reserve your spot!

It was my first visit to our Falkirk Knit and Natter group which runs every second Monday, and I have started to learn how to crochet (not brave enough to knit yet 😉)
The group is open to anyone who would like to learn how to knit, or is looking for a wee blather as they knit!
Come see us next time 😉

It's the end of Deafblind Awareness Week and we started the week by doing the Deafblind Manual at our Voices Off BSL class on Monday night.
This class will return on 19th August and is free so do get in touch if you would like to attend.
In the meantime, here's a great video from Deafblind Scotland demonstrating the Deafblind Manual which is the name given to the form of communication/sign language that Deafblind people use.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along to our Summer BBQ.
We were delighted to welcome many staff, partners, Centre users and volunteers to the event.
The Centre would like to thank our volunteers, plus; Forth Environment Link Morrisons Falkirk Community Champion, Patricks of camelon, Solicitors For Older People Scotland, Falkirk Delivers, Falkirk Active Travel Hub and Sustainable Thinking Scotland C.I.C from Bo’ness for all their hard work, support and donations.
... The burgers were amazing, the pizza from the wee wood fired oven with the organic ingredients was sublime.
The event marked the start of our Climate Challenge Fund Project, Making Sense of Energy Saving and highlighted sustainable travel thanks to the presence of the Dr Bike team.
We even got the weather! Can't complain!

Thank you to Lornshill Academy and Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) for inviting us along today. We are delighted to say we won! The girls representing us were amazing, such a massive amount of work, from using BSL in their presentation and the demonstration on how to negotiate obstacles when blindfolded. We are truly privileged and look forward to working with you after the summer

We've been testing out the idea of podcasts at the request of some members of the Centre user Group who find them really useful for people with sight loss.
Our first was the Volunteer Newsletter. Have you had a listen and what did you think?

We had a great day on Saturday 8th June hosting Forth Valley VIPs (Visually Impaired People) jointly with our partner RNIB Scotland.
17 people came to find out more about what the sensory centre has to offer and to learn about the fast growing RNIB Connect Community.
Great to see lots of new faces from across Forth Valley. The "Speed Connecting" session gave our VIPs the chance to hear from individuals involved with RNIB Connect and the Sensory Centre.
... VIPS were enjoying each other's company so much that they had to be asked to leave eventually so that staff could get home! If you want to find out more about RNIB Connect, please contact Susan Burn on susan.burn@rnib.org.uk or phone 07864 958240.
