Police Scotland has issued a warning to families about new methods sneak thieves are using to break into locked homes, with minimal time, effort or noise.

Officers in communities in and around Glasgow have urged homeowners and tenants who have a ‘Euro Profile Locking Cylinder’ (fitted to 90 per cent of UPVC and composite doors in the UK) to have them upgraded to a ‘Break Secure’ type of lock.

Snapping is the method used by home thieves to force off the front part of the lock cylinder, to expose the internal parts of the locking mechanism.

Bumping uses a special key, which is widely available on the internet to simply unlock your door - it involves no forced entry and does not damage the lock which in some cases can lead to insurance firms refusing to payout.
