Chàirdean chòir, Taing dhuibh uile airson tadhal air duilleag Facebook na Gaelic Guides! Thanks very much for visiting the page and for all your 'likes' and comments. It’s not my intention to get too ‘political’ on this page – after all, the Gaelic Guides are all about getting a good holiday experience! Having said that though, here’s a story that is worth highlighting because of what it tells us about the place of Gaelic in Scotland. Some of you may have seen the coverage... in the media about the National Museum of Scotland's new Jacobites exhibition? While it may tell the Jacobite story in an authoritative and interesting way, it does not give the Gaelic language its proper place in that story. Yes, Gaelic content is available on request, or via the website, but by leaving Gaelic itself out of the mainstream exhibition it leaves a huge part of the story untold. Following the 1745 Jacobite rebellion Gaelic was actively quashed and repressed – surely any exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland should be able to tell that part of the story – drawing on the rich sources available in the language itself? Unfortunately this sort of bypassing of a Gaelic perspective in the tourism market isn’t too surprising, and it was one of the main reasons for setting up the Gaelic Guides – trying to provide an opportunity for visitors to get an alternative point of view on Scotland’s story, and to be entertaining at the same time! www.gaelicguides.co.uk Gur math thèid leibh!
