About Galedin Veterinary- Equine

Whether it's your small household pet or large animal that need our attention, our team of over 30 vets have broad collective experiences to ensure that your animal gets incomparable care.

Galedin Veterinary- Equine Description

Our journey to become Galedin Vets began over 100 years ago. In 1817, Robert Glaister was invited and paid 50 guineas by the Border Union Agricultural society to move his practice from Wooler in Northumberland, to Kelso.

Whether it's your small household pet, your horse or your livestock that need our attention, our team of over 30 vets have broad collective experiences to ensure that your animal gets incomparable care.

But how do you pronounce 'Galedin'? Well, that depends on who you ask, but we say it "Gah-Ledd-Inn".

Whilst, thankfully, we don't attend many horse trailer incidents, they do occur from time to time. Knowing how to release a struck horse can really help stop any further injuries. Please do however remember that your safety is paramount. If your horse is struggling and distressed in the trailer, then often leaving the door closed and calling the emergency services is the best thing you can do.

Cameron took a starring role in the latest episode of the BBC series Ferne and Rory’s Vet Tales. We’re pleased to say McGregor is doing well and Cameron’s taste in trousers hasn’t changed!

Many thanks to everyone who called us this morning, reporting an injured deer on the side of the A1 north of Reston. We are pleased to say the deer has been examined by one of our vets, treated and released back into the Reston area this afternoon. Don't forget wildilfe casualties can be reported to us, or directly to the SSPCA on 03000 999 999.

** Regumate Equine Product Information **
In September 2018, traces of an anabolic steroid were found in Regumate Equine. This steroid is called Trendione and is a 'Prohibited At All Times Substance' under the BHA Rules of Racing. The BHA states as such, at this time, we would advise trainers and other industry participants to remove Regumate Equine from all licensed premises, and not to administer this product.
The British Equine Federation has sought clarification from the... FEI, who have confirmed it remains permissible to use oral Regumate Equine in mares in accordance with the manufacturer’s directions.
This is an unusual situaution, with two organisations giving very different advice. We would therefore advise anyone competing under FEI rules to ensure they are doing so as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Anyone with racehorses in training, or with foals that may go into training, should ensure all Regumate is removed from their premises.

We're still hard at work trying to muster some growth on our top lips and there'll be some progress photos soon. In the meantime, look at the majestic stallion sporting an even more majestic Mo'!
Think your four legged friend has a better one? Take a picture and share it in the comments to show it off.
Thanks to everyone who has donated so far! There's still time though and every penny raised will make a fantastic difference: https://moteam.co/galedin-does-movember?m c=1

As you will all be aware this Sunday marks 100 years since the armistice that ended fighting in the first world war. As we commemorate the deaths of the 1.1 million British and Commonwealth that gave their lives in the war I wondered if we could spare a thought for one in particular.
David Hannah was born in Portobello in 1881. He entered the Dick Vet in October 1904 and qualified MRCVS in May 1909. After qualifying went to work as an assistant to a John Hutton FRCVS at Prin...glebank in Kelso and bought the practice on the death of Hutton in February 1910. Following the outbreak of war in August 1914 he volunteered and was commissioned as temporary Lieutenant in the Army Veterinary Corps in September and was sent to France the very same month. He served as a Veterinary Officer with 7th Brigade of the Royal Horse Artillery and was in action during the early campaigns of the war and was awarded the 1914 Star with Bar (the "Mons Star"). He was promoted to Captain in September 1915. He died, age 36, at No. 2. Red Cross Hospital in Rouen on the 17th January 1918. His entry in the Army Register of Effects gives the cause of his death as "Self Inflicted Wounds". He is buried in the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery at St Sever, Rouen.
The practice Hannay left was continued through the war by AB Tully and in 1919 Tully was joined by Alec McTurk, a former professor of Medicine and Obstetrics at the Dick Vet. Later still the practice was joined another generation of vets: Norman Keith, Tom Rogerson and Roger Baird. The practice continued as Rogerson, Baird and Wain and then as Rogerson and Partners and then eventually as Merlin Veterinary Group. In 2015 the practice left by Hannay to serve in the war became Galedin Veterinary.
The photo attached shows Hannay as a member of the Dick Vet football team in 1907.
Lest we forget

Some scary news for you this Hallowe'en; Galedin are doing Movemeber!
From tomorrow, you may see some suspect facial hair appearing on some of our top lips. We apologise in advance for how unprofessional they may look but its for an excellent cause.
The Movember Foundation raises funds and awareness for a range of men's health issues including testicular cancer, prostate cancer and mental health. Please help us to stop men dying too young.
... We can't all grow-a-mo so we have also set ourselves a 'Move for Movember' target. As a practice we have got to run, walk or crawl 1000km (!) in 30 days.
There'll also be other Movember competitions and updates so keep your eyes peeled.
If you'd like to make a donation or monitor our progress in the challenge, please go to our Mo' Space at: https://moteam.co/galedin-does-movember?m c=1
Thanks everyone and Happy Hallowe'en!

*****GASTROSCOPY OFFER NOVEMBER 2018***** Gastric ulcers are a very common problem for horses, particularly competition horses, where up to 63% of horses suffer from them. Even over 1/3 of leisure horses will have them. Ulcers can cause a wide variety of signs including: 1)poor performance 2) weight loss... 3) change in behaviour 4) problems tacking up 5) mild recurrent colic 6) loss of condition 7) dullness of coat If you suspect your horse has gastric ulcers, it is recommended that they are scoped to diagnose the type and severity of the ulcers. On the 22nd November, we are running a Gastroscopy clinic at the Cheeklaw Clinic in Duns, where the price of a scope is greatly reduced, (£120), and if your horse needs treatment, there is 10% off the first box of UlcerGold. Please contact the practice for more information and to book onto this clinic. Places are a first-come, first-serve basis.
