About Galloway Talking Newspaper

GTN is part of a national voluntary organisation set up to record selected articles from local newspaper for the benefit of the blind and partially sighted

Galloway Talking Newspaper Description

The GTN Association exists to make local news available to those who, for various reasons, are unable to read the newspapers themselves.

If you are reading this and know of someone who you think would benefit from this service, it is entirely free, including the postage, so please don't hesitate to get in touch.

The process:

Every Wednesday, GTN volunteer Administrators receive returned recordings from listeners in reusable plastic pouches and sort and prepare them for the current week. Editors select and edit items from the Wigtownshire Free Press and the Galloway Gazette, (courtesy of these publications). These items are then recorded by two pairs of Readers, with one male & one female in each team to give variation of voice and pitch. The process is lead by a Presenter, with a Technical Officer controlling the equipment and editing the recordings. In excess of 70 duplicates on USB Memory Sticks are then produced from the original recording.

The USB Sticks are placed in pouches and sent out by Freepost that evening. The sticks are returned in the same way, again using Freepost provided by Royal Mail.

More than 40 Volunteers in 4 Teams are involved in this work; some carrying out more than one job.

Magazine recordings are also sent out in most months.
