About Glasgow Central Mosque

Scotland's Largest Mosque

Glasgow Central Mosque Description

The History:
The early Muslim migrants were gifted visionaries who wanted to build an architectural jewel. Their hard work paid off when Glasgow Central Mosque opened to the public in 1984 as the first purpose-built mosque in Glasgow at a cost of £10 million in today's terms.

As one of the most recognisable buildings in the city, it is visited by a large number of people, including the media, schools, colleges, universities and anyone wanting to learn more about Islam.
5, 000 of us visit it every week to pray, gain knowledge, get married or attend funeral prayers, which makes it the focal point of our lives from beginning to end.

The Future :
In its 30th year of heavy use, the wear and tear is beginning to show. Join us in polishing the jewel back to its former splendour by donating towards new carpets, new boilers, air conditioning for the women's area, roof repairs, toilet upgrades, electrics, car park completion and restoration of the magnificent golden dome which beautifies the city skyline.

This is an excellent opportunity to earn a recurring reward (sadaqah jariyah) for you, your family or loved ones who have passed away. Allah will reward you every time someone uses the facilities that you helped build or improve.

"Whoever builds a mosque for Allah, Allah will build for him likewise in Paradise. " [Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim]

*** Muharram/Ashura Fasting ***
Alhamdulillah we are currently in the month of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic year. It is known as one of the sacred months referred to in the Quran e Kareem.
The day of Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, is an important day. On this day in history, many Nations and people were freed from oppression by Allah swt and this is also the day on which the family of Rasulullah ﷺ including his Grandson and many Sahaba gave their lives for the ba...nner of truth and justice to fly high.
This is a month which Allah swt and the Prophet ﷺ have honoured; therefore it is important for us to honour this month also.
Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah swt be pleased with them both) said: "I never saw the Messenger of Allah ta' ala so keen to fast any day other than this day, [the day of 'Ashura'] ….(Bukhari)
The Prophet ﷺ also said: "For those who fast on the day of ‘Ashura’, I hope that Allah ta’ala will accept it as expiation for the previous year". (Muslim) [meaning this fast makes up the shortcomings of the year passed]
During this month it is recommended by the Mashaikh to:
- Make extra effort to abstain from the acts of disobedience whilst seeking out opportunities to increase Ibaadat
- If we aren't already, observe the Sunnah fasts of Monday, Thursday and the 13th, 14th & 15th of the Islamic month
- Fast the 10th combining it with either the 9th or 11th
- Increase our Salawat upon the Prophet ﷺ
- Increase our recitation of the Quran e kareem at this time of the year. They would make special Isaal e sawab for the beloved Grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, His family and the Sahabah RA.
- Show generosity towards family members on the 10th
May Allah SWT give us the ability to take fully from the blessings of the sacred months.
