Glasgow Clyde College: Faculty Of Health & Wellbeing Description

HNC Social Care


This full-time course is for those interested in a career in social care who may wish to undertake a formal qualification. It involves both practical and theoretical work.

You will undertake a work experience placement during the course. This course meets the criteria for Scottish Social Services Council registration as a care practitioner.

Course content



•Core subjects: Social Care theory for practice; Social policy and its application to social services; Psychology for social care practice; Protection of Individuals; Sociology for social care practice and a Graded Unit
•SVQ units: Promote effective communication for and about individuals; Promote, monitor and maintain health, safety and security in the working environment; Reflect and develop your practice, and Promote choice, wellbeing and protection
•Optional Subjects: you will also undertake two further units.




Entry requirements


•NC Social Care - Level 6, or two Highers, one of which should be English and a second relevant Higher
•Other equivalent qualifications will be considered.
•two suitable references and a separate personal statement should be supplied prior to interview
•120 hours of relevant practical experience, either in a paid or a voluntary capacity in a recognised care organisation
•mature applicants without formal qualifications may be considered if they have relevant work /care experience and successfully complete a written task.
Candidates will be required to enter the PVG scheme administered by Disclosure Scotland. This check will be carried out before undertaking work experience. Any applicant who has offences that may be recorded on a Disclosure Scotland check should discuss this with staff at interview.

•1st year entry to BA /MA Social Work at University of Dundee, University of Stirling and University of Strathclyde (Glasgow School of Social Work)
•1st year entry to BA Social Work (Scotland), Open University.
•BA /BSc Health and Social Care, Open University.
•2nd year entry to the BA in Integrated Public Services at University of West of Scotland
•SVQ Level 3 Social Services (Children And Young People) or SVQ Level 3 Social Services And Healthcare
•Employment within the care sector.

NQ Social Care - Level 6
This course is designed to give the skills and experience required to pursue a career in social care. The course covers many aspects of the caring role with a range of service users. Students cover a range of NQ Care units at Higher level and Intermediate 2 level, as well as a placement in a care setting.

•Sociology for Care
•Values and Principles in Care
•Stress and Stress Management
•Understanding and Supporting People in Health and Social Care Settings
•Caring for People with Dementia
•Practical Skills for Carers
•Working as a Team
•Core skills.

Entry requirements
•four Credit level Standard Grades including English OR four Intermediate 2 at A or B, including English OR NQ Social Care (Level 5) or equivalent (for example, the new National 5 qualifications)
•one suitable reference and a personal statement

NQ Social Care - Level 5

The NQ Social Care Level 5 course is made up of a number of different units that combine to give students an overall introduction to Social Care.

Course content
Units that will be studied may include:
•Communication
•Information Technology
•Psychology for Care
•Families in Modern Society
•Sociology for Care
•Understanding Needs of the Older Person
•Working with Others
•Understanding Loss and Grief
•Values and Principles in Care
•Working with Individuals with Additional Support Needs
Please note that there is no placement element on this course

You will be assessed by continuous assessment with closed and open book assessments used.

Entry requirements
•Three Standard Grades at general level, one of which must be English, or equivalent National 4s
•Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and /or work experience.

Progression routes
Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to the NC Social Care Level 6, (or other care courses), and thereafter the HNC Social Care course. Many of the Units on the Level 5 course will be explored further on the Level 6 course, and students will be therefore be well prepared by undertaking this course first. It also gives students a solid introduction to the way a Further Education College works, including the assessment process.

Employment options may include care assistant posts in the care sector.
