There will also be a short, behind the scenes tour of Glasgow Museums store to view our collection of chairs – including originals designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh. There are still spaces available for our specialist and themed tours this week. On Tuesday 14th August at 14:30, we have The People who Donated our Paintings. From the late 19th century, paintings currently stored at GMRC were donated to Glasgow Museums. The donors came from all walks of life. Come along and hear some of their stories beside the paintings they donated.
On Thursday 16th August at 14:30 there is an Art Highlights tour where you can discover some of the highlights of the art collection at GMRC.
Please book in advance for both tours by emailing GMRCBookings@glasgowlife.org.uk or phoning 0141 276 9300.

David Hockney "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean" 1962 Etching and aquatint in three colors with collage Edition of 50 approximately 18 x 17 3/4... © David Hockney Photo Credit: Richard Schmidt
David Hockney was twenty-four years old and a student at the Royal College of Art in London when he made this print. He was already a successful artist. The subject of the work is his first trip to the USA in 1961. Hockney depicts himself in the print, initialled ‘Dh’ and holding up an American flag. During this time, Hockney was separated from his male lover, Peter Crutch, a fellow design student. The print reflects his feelings and thoughts of longing towards Crutch during their separation. Crutch is depicted in the print and identified by the initial ‘p’.
This print by David Hockney was exhibited when art representing same sex love was still criminalised by British society. It was not until 1967 that the Sexual Offences Act partially decriminalised homosexuality in England and Wales.

What a fantastic resource right on my doorstep. My kids had a great time at the spring workshop and short tour today. You even managed to engage my teenager during the tour which is quite an achievement! Looking forward to coming back to do a more in-depth tour sometime soon.

User

What a fantastic place... Really enjoyed my visit... I could have spent a day in each pod!!! Thank you to Billy for showing is round!!!

User

Went to the wee creatives yesterday morning in GMRC. Would recommend to all, we got to see different animals and paintings and even had a sing along. The person taking the class was lovely, I'm sure her name is Joanna. On the plus side it's also free. A great way to meet other parents.

The workshop takes place last Wednesday of every month, there is a morning session 10:30-11:30, afternoon session 13:30-14:30.

User

We attended the art detectives workshop today and had a great time. Kids loved the tour and using the treasure map to explore the paintings was lots of fun.

User

Visited as a group yesterday and really, really enjoyed the time.

This is a hidden gem. I had no idea this was 5 minutes from my home. Certainly can't wait to go again. Staff so very nice and entertaining.

User

The Vintage Motorcycle Club had a great day at the Resource Centre. Many thanks goes to Scott and Billy @ the Resource Centre for putting on an excellent tour .This is an amazing place ,the staff are Fantastic with great hospitality and knowledge .I'm sure we will visit very soon .I recommend everyone to have a visit and experience this.

User

The Glasgow group of the VMCC , that's the vintage motorcycle club paid a visit today, An amazing place where a fascinating collection of old vehicles are being looked after. It's just a shame that so many of them will never turn a wheel again....would it not be possible with some help to get some of these machines back in running order? And maybe run round the car park a couple of days a year?

A big thank you to Staff ,Billy , Scott and Eric for their escort duties..thanks again guys... Trying to put some photos on .

User

Surprising and fascinating- a hidden gem the size of 2 or 3 B and Q warehouses.

User

Stay 5 mins away and only just discovered that it is open to the public. Had a brilliant afternoon with my 4yr old today. Tour was great and hours spent doing arts and crafts. Will not be the last visit!

User

Really good place to spend a rainy day for kids of all ages!

User

Paid another visit yesterday to the Glasgow Museums Resource Centre. This time my friend and I turned up for a specialist tour on Geology. I was a bit apprehensive as my knowledge of this subject is somewhat limited. However we joined quite a large group of people and took part in a fascinating exhibition of minerals, rocks and fossils. The artefacts we were shown were amazing and varied and the lady who showed us these answered all our questions knowledgeably and made the talk really interesting. I enjoyed all of it and the time flew by. Thanks to Anne for an interesting afternoon.

User

Just brilliant. So many artefacts and deeply knowledgeable staff.

Highly recommended.

User

It's like the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

User

I just wanted to say thank you so so much for such a wonderful place! Despite living less than 10 mins away, we only discovered you this week through the school holiday workshops which were excellent and entertained both our 7yo twins and our 4yo equally!

The highlight though was the enthusiasm of the staff and in particular our tour of the natural history pods with Grant today. He kept us all enthralled for a solid hour and yet we saw a tiny fraction of the collection and could have stayed all day! Our daughter Ivy in particular (who wants to be a zoologist) said it was one of the best experiences of her life and I have a feeling we'll be back many more times over the coming weeks, months and years!

Thank you x 100000 from all of us!

User
