Glasgow University Dialectic Society

The Glasgow University Dialectic Society is one of the oldest student organisations in the world. Founded by Papal Bull in 1451, alongside the University, the society has taken on many guises and forms over the years, being re-instituted into its current form in 1861. The society founded the Glasgow University Union (GUU) in 1885 and the Glasgow University Students Representative Council (SRC) in 1886, alongside the Glasgow University Athletics Association (Now the Glasgow University Sports Association - GUSA) and the University of Glasgow Medico-Chirurgical Society. The society maintains a close relationship with the Glasgow University Union and its debating wing in particular, with many students sharing membership of both organisations, the Dialectic President serving as an Honorary member of the GUU debates committee, and the Convenor of Debates being an Honorary member of the Dialectic board. The society currently exists to promote the strong tradition of public speech, debate and discussion that the University of Glasgow, through its Staff, Students and Alumni, has championed throughout its history. We have an annual calendar of events that run each year, culminating in our Flagship Annual Members Dinner and Debate at the beginning of March. We are currently in the process of rebuilding the back-end infrastructure for managing our website and keeping in touch with Alumni from across the years.
