Great St Mary's, the University Church, is the heart of Cambridge and a diverse Christian community for 800 years, with a tower that's the best view in Cambridge. Services online 9am & 9pm weekdays, 9. 30am Sundays, and in church Sundays 8 & 10. 30am.

Great St Mary'S, The University Church, Cambridge Description

Great St Mary’s has maintained its witness to the faith of Christ for many centuries. It has carried out this mission in many ways as a parish church in the diocese of Ely, as the Church of the University of Cambridge, as a place of prayer and celebration for all the citizens of Cambridge.
Great St Mary's is a community which worships on Sundays and through the week, with a strong musical tradition and a lively programme of activities for all ages including special activities for children. A wide variety of preachers are invited to services and special events.
The church is also a centre of civic services and events, concerts and exhibitions. For information on how to get baptised, or married at Great St Mary’s, please visit our website.
Great St Mary's has the only ring of twelve bells in the county, on which the ‘Westminister chimes’ of Big Ben were composed and first rung. The pulpit is on rails so that it can be moved to a central position for major sermons and the church has two organs.
The parish is known as St Mary the Great with St Michael, Cambridge, and we also worship in the chapel of the Michaelhouse Centre in the historic St Michael’s Church just 50 yards along Trinity Street.

This is the season of Kingdom-tide, when we remember that amidst the divisions and brokenness of the nations, there is a greater, heavenly kingdom to which we are called. But this is no pie-in-the-sky denial in the midst of #Brexit or other crises. This is a reminder that we are called, in our earthly affairs as well as spiritual, to a far higher standard of ethics and hope.

Our Associate Vicar, the Revd Devin McLachlan, and the Revd Alexander Ross, Honorary Chaplain to the University of Cambridge OTC, lead the prayers at today’s #RemembranceDay service. Reprinting those prayers, that you might join us in remembering the fallen and in praying for peace:
Let us pray for all who suffer as a result of war, and ask that God may give us peace: for the service men and women who have died in the violence of war, each one remembered by and known to God;... may God give peace.
For those who love them in death as in life; offering the distress of our grief and the sadness of our loss; may God give peace.
For all members of the armed forces who are in danger this day; for their family, friends and all who pray for their safe return; may God give peace.
For refugees made homeless by war and terror, and all who live with the physical and mental wounds of war, calling to mind in penitence the damage done by the anger and hatreds of humanity; may God give peace.
For medics, first responders, peacemakers and for all who work for justice and reconciliation. may God give peace.
For all who bear the burden and privilege of leadership, asking for gifts of wisdom and resolve may God give peace.
For the grace that we might pray even for our enemies and those whose hatred leads them to violence, may God give peace.
God of truth and justice, we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence: those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen

The climb to the top of the tower is well worth the small fee, the views were fantastic. I'm not a religious person but seemed to find solace in difficult times sitting in the church. A trip I will always remember.

User

Go there on a Sunday afternoon and time it close to the top of the hour! Very small fee to climb all of the way to the top of the watchtower and once you get up there...it's truly amazing to have all of the church bells ring beneath your feet while you look across the incredible horizon of Cambridge! Amazing experience!!

User

User

Beautiful church in the middle of Cambridge. We were there to enjoy the beautiful concert given by the Trinity Singers from South Africa yesterday. Wonderful uplifting anthems and songs many in an African style. What a treat!

User

Beautiful building and it's free. £2.90 to climb the bell tower which has fantastic views of the city especially Jesus college. Just be careful if you go up in a storm like I did in Storm Doris it's very windy. Try and stay up long enough to hear the bells.

The church authorities did a great job providing facilities and support to the many Bell ringers and their supporters on June 23rd 2018. Especially for the children .

Es maravillosa!! Las campanadas de la iglesia hacian una música celestial. Yo fui el día del funeral de Stephen Hawking y fue maravilloso

I attended a free lunchtime concert here and climbed the tower. I already knew I liked the programme when I was given it, but as it turned out the pianist herself was distinguished, having played for Peng Liyuan on the Chinese State Visit in 2015. While the interior is not much to look at - I have Oxford University's St. Mary's Church to compare this one to - the ascent up the tower is steep and narrow as if it were inside a castle, and the top of the tower had very considerate openings in the metal safety grating for visitors to look through. The staff are kind and helpful - when I thought I had lost my hat and came to enquire about it the day after the concert, it was brought to me by the verger.
