Heat Smart Orkney Description
What is the Heat Smart Orkney project?
The Heat Smart Orkney project diverts unused renewable energy into affordable heating, which addresses fuel poverty- a major issue in Orkney affecting 63% of the population. The project’s goal is to recruit 100 homes to participate within the first year, with a goal of 300 households by year five.
What does the Heat Smart Orkney project hope to prove?
We hope to prove that by increasing the local demand on the grid at times of curtailment combined with switching on secondary heating systems we can demonstrate that primary heating system can work and cost less; thereby reducing fuel poverty.
How does the Heat Smart Orkney project work?
By continuously monitoring the electrical grid’s ‘measuring points’, we can anticipate when turbines will be curtailed.
Units including dynamos, meters, radiators, flow boilers and /or immersion heaters installed in participating homes by Heat Smart Orkney technicians will be switched on once curtailment is identified, creating a local ‘demand side management system’.
