Heriot-Watt University celebrated the opening of a brand new Bloomberg Trading Room at its Edinburgh Campus this week.
Students and staff were invited to the opening ceremony of the Bloomberg Room complete with ceremonial ribbon cutting.
Dr Mo Sherif, who led on the project along with Project Manager Keith Spencer, gave a presentation on the benefits the room will bring before thanking everyone who has been involved in 'making this dream a reality'.
... Head of the School of Social Sciences, Prof. Robert MacIntosh, then cut the ribbon to officially open the room, and it wasn't long before everyone was trying out the world-class facility for themselves.

“Bursting with excitement!”
“Once you know how to use the Bloomberg Terminals you’ve really got the world in your hands”
If the rest of our students are half as enthusiastic as James is about the opening of our new Bloomberg Trading Room then we’re on to a winner.
... We spoke to the President of Heriot-Watt University’s Trading and Investments Society at the launch of our Bloomberg Room yesterday and he told us why he’s thrilled with the new addition to our Edinburgh campus.

Alan Gow and Anna Sedda from Heriot-Watt Psychology have been out and about doing their thing at the Fringe this month. Their shows What Keeps You Sharp? and Disgust for Dummies at the Cabaret of Dangerous Ideas went down a storm (and looked like a lot of fun!) #LoveWattYouDo

Exciting times for Economics at Heriot-Watt University right now!
After achieving our highest ever ranking for Economics in the Guardian University League Tables last year (3rd in the UK), the National Student Survey this year has found that Student Satisfaction in the Department is over 92%, the 2nd highest in Scotland and 12th highest in the UK.
The Head of Economics at Heriot-Watt University, Professor Joe Byrne, explained why he felt our Economics students have such hig...h levels of satisfaction, saying…
“We’re very pleased to have overall satisfaction levels exceeding 90% in the National Student Survey, having performed consistently at that level for several years.
Underpinning these results, it seems our students have found the style of teaching very helpful and that they can see that staff care about the student experience, for example in providing comprehensive learning materials. The students find their economics course material topical and relevant to the real world and there have been improvements in facilities year on year.”
Professor Byrne is picture here next to a model of Panmure House, the only remaining home of Adam Smith, the father of modern economics. It is being restored by Heriot-Watt University and Edinburgh Business School to create a centre of global economic, political and social debate.

With the news that we’ve been ranked the number 1 university in Scotland for Languages in the National Student Survey 2018, we thought we’d look back on what one of our Interpreting and Translating students, Gregar Millar, had to say about his experience studying in the department.
- On choosing the degree and university
“I wanted to be able to study Languages within a practical context and the Interpreting and Translating degree course allowed me to continue my studies of l...anguage and cultures but importantly put my skills into practice. Throughout my studies, I became aware of how interesting and rewarding interpreting can be, to facilitate communication between different parties in a multicultural environment. It is for this reason, that now I am intending to pursue a career in interpretation. The facilities on campus are exceptional, the teaching staff and equipment are fantastic. Furthermore, the university offers dual language degrees, which means two Erasmus placements!”
- On his favourite courses
“A course which I particularly enjoyed was International Politics, this class gave us important background information which is very helpful when translating or interpreting. We studied several international organisations such as the EU, the UN and NATO. Another course is Computer Assisted Translation Tools which is often a requirement for translation jobs, so is very useful.”
- On the teaching staff and department
“Within the languages department all of the teaching staff are of the highest standard, with so much experience and knowledge. They have all shaped my experience here and without them it wouldn’t be possible for me to have advanced in the way in which I have. The personal tutor system is really helpful, we are allocated a personal tutor who is a member of academic staff. They are able to help us and advise us with whatever issues we may have. We are encouraged to meet with them regularly.”
- On the experience
“There are always social events to take part in, including a multilingual film club and the languages society organises events most weeks. Furthermore, Edinburgh as a city is excellent for students, as the capital of Scotland, there is always something going on, with many student friendly events, bars and clubs.”

It was such a proud moment to discover our students had ranked us as the number 1 university in Scotland for Languages in the National Student Survey 2018.
We discussed the results with Dr McLaren-Hankin, Head of Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, and she told us how the professional focus of our teaching and the community atmosphere within the department lead to such high levels of student satisfaction…
“We are absolutely delighted with this year's NSS result...s which place us top in Scotland in our subject category and 10th in the UK. The views of our students and the student experience are of immense importance to us. That’s why we are constantly working to ensure that our programmes are both academically excellent and professionally relevant, and that our students benefit from top class facilities.”
“Our students comment on how supportive and approachable our staff are, and about the sense of community in our department. We believe that all of these factors combine to give our students an excellent and enjoyable academic experience that places them in the perfect position to move into their chosen careers.”
