About Heritage At Great St Mary'S

Great St Mary's is a historic church in the heart of Cambridge. Thanks to HLF funding, we are developing activities to bring Cambridge's history to life!

Heritage At Great St Mary'S Description

Great St Mary's has always been at the heart of Cambridge, central to both town (as a parish church and much-loved landmark) and gown (as the University church).

Have you ever wanted to know more about the history of Cambridge?

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth I visited Great St Mary's and dazzled the assembled academics with a Latin speech?

Have you heard that a man's body was dug up from Great St Mary's and publicly burned in the market square for heresy?

Do you know why there's a sphinx in the stained glass window?

This new, HLF-funded public history project based at Great St Mary's aims to bring these stories, and many more, to life. Aimed at local people, schools and community groups, as well as tourists, the project will include interactive displays, living history events and workshops.
