Many thanks to two of our students for speaking so positively and frankly last night at Alness Baptist Church about their experiences of being students at HTC. They’ve both had to juggle their studies with family and church commitments. It was good to hear of the contrast between one studying part-time whilst doing a demanding full time job and the other studying as a full-time student, also the contrast between one being an on-campus student and the other being off-campus. Both said that their faith has been deepened and strengthened during their time at HTC – it is ‘a community of faith and scholarship’.

Twenty years ago this week HTC took delivery of the keys of the building it now occupies as its main campus in Dingwall. Here’s a wee bit of history: The National Bank of Scotland opened a branch in Dingwall in February 1829, not far at all from the building HTC currently occupies. The bank bought land from the branch agent at the time (Hugh Innes Cameron) and built the premises between 1841/42 for the princely sum of £2084.16.5 using architect William Robertson. We haven’t b...een able to see any plans or photographs from this time so cannot be sure that there were no further builds or alterations. The branch closed in 1961 after the merger of National Bank of Scotland and Commercial Bank of Scotland, to form National Commercial Bank of Scotland. The building was then taken over by the Hydro Board, which added the ‘newer’ construction at the back. While part of the Hydro, this was the nerve centre for controlling dams across the Highlands – and also somewhere you could pay your electric bill. When HTC acquired the premises they had to be gutted and refurbished to provide classroom, office and library provision. As an HTC supporter once said, ‘from the power of money to the power of electricity to the power of God’.

Congratulations to the Academic Staff team on another successful 5-year revalidation of the PhD programme. The programme received several commendations, including strong endorsement of the quality of the library support and the high quality of supervisory support. HTC has produced about 40 PhD graduates (plus many more DMin and MTh graduates), many of whom are professors in seminaries and theological colleges in the UK, USA and further afield. Informal enquiries about postgraduate study should be addressed in the first instance to htcadmissions@uhi.ac.uk www.htc.uhi.ac.uk/…/mphil---phd-postgra duate-research-degre…

There’s an article in the Press and Journal about Michael McMullin [BA(Hons) 2017] and the excellent work he is doing for the homeless in Edinburgh. Well done Michael! https://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/…/nor th-east-man-who-suf…/

A crowd gathered in a very cold but dry School Wynd, Paisley to celebrate the official opening of HTC-Paisley. There were speeches from Rev Hector Morrison (principal of HTC), Prof Neil Simco (UHI vice principal Research and Impact), Lorraine Cameron (Provost of Renfrewshire) and a dedicatory prayer by Rev John Fulton. After the cutting of the ribbon there was the cutting of the cake (Matt Ritchie is one of our fourth year students). Dr Jamie Grant (HTC vice principal) interviewed two groups of students during the evening service then Rev Colin Sinclair gave a very relevant message focusing on the call to ministry. A memorable day to mark this historic milestone in the life of HTC. Praise God for his faithfulness!
