Rope rescue training - vertical access and recovery
This month's training across Moray has focused on the use of our rope rescue equipment, specifically for vertical access and recovery.
We can use this when needing to enter small, awkward places that you may find along the coast e.g. with caves or on vessels. We can use these techniques to remove casualties relatively simply. We can also use these skills to assist other services at various types of incidents.
... We would like to thank the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for the use of the training facility in Elgin and Macduff Shipyards for allowing us access onto a vessel in Macduff harbour.
Next month we will be focusing on water rescue within the harbours/marinas within the area so look out for our next update.
In a coastal emergency dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Fochabers Emergency Services Event
Come and meet your local Coastguard Search and Rescue Team at this event in Fochabers on the 15th of June.
As well as having our vehicles/equipment on display we will also be allowing people to have a go at using rescue throwlines - a method of reaching someone in the water throwing a long rope from the waters edge. It sounds easy but in practice it isn't - come and try your skills out!

Day 4 of our Core Skills programme was a cracker!

Big congratulations are in order for our new entry Coastguard Rescue Officers following the completion of their Coastguard Emergency Responder Casualty Care (CERCC) course.
Following more instruction in medical emergencies and stretcher work our officers were put to the test with a series of practical and theory assessments.
We're delighted to say they all passed with flying colours.
... Next up, Day 4.

Today Coastguard Rescue Officers from our Banff, Portsoy and Burghead teams joined colleagues from across the area to take part in their Rope Rescue Operators assessment.
This assessment marks the end of nearly two months of hard work and we're incredibly proud to say they passed with flying colours.
Congratulations!

Buckie Coastguard Rescue Team arrived on station this afternoon to find a box of time expired pyrotechnics had been illegally dumped outside the station. These were left in full view of the general public and could potentially have been picked up by children.
The team followed their procedures and secured the pyrotechnics before transporting to our licenced store in Inverness.
It is an offence, and dangerous to dump marine pyrotechnics. For queries regarding the disposal of out of date pyrotechnics contact Coastguard Operations Centre Aberdeen on 01224 592334 and they can advise you of safe disposal options.

Rescue 151 - First tasking working with our Rescue Teams
The new AW189 search and rescue helicopter based at Inverness carried out it's first tasking in our area, alongside our Coastguard Rescue Teams from Buckie and Portsoy, earlier today.
A person taking part in a charity walk fell and required medical assistance in a remote area between Cullen and Sandend.
... Our teams were on scene quickly and alongside the event first aiders and Ambulance staff, decided that a helicopter extraction would be easiest and safest.
The helicopter assisted in moving the casualty to an awaiting Ambulance in Cullen.
We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

Animal Rescues
We are regularly called out to assist persons and animals in trouble along the coast.
Never enter the water after your pet, rather keep an eye on where it is and dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. We will assess what is safest do and come to assist.
... All too often, the owner will get into difficulties whilst the animal will make its way safely ashore.
