About Hms Scotia

HMS Scotia is the principal Royal Naval Reserve unit for the East of Scotland.

Hms Scotia Description

In 1958, a RNR Headquarters Unit was formed at the Maritime Head Quarters (MHQ) Pitreavie in Fife, to provide augmentee personnel for the Staff of Flag Officer Scotland.

The name HMS SCOTIA was adopted in 1960. The previous ship of that name was a Royal Naval Signals wartime shore training establishment, in Ayr.

In 1962, HMS SCOTIA moved out of the underground MHQ, into accommodation above ground nearby.

In the post Cold War defence review of 1994, the unit absorbed reservists from the closing Units of HMS Camperdown in Dundee and HMS Claverhouse in Edinburgh, to become the largest RNR unit in the UK.

In 1996, following the closure of both MHQ Pitreavie and HM Naval Base Rosyth, HMS SCOTIA relocated to its current buildings within HMS CALEDONIA.

Tay Division, HMS SCOTIA's satellite unit, was set up in Dundee in 1999.

Welcome back 'Daisy'!
AB ”Daisy” Adam returned to us recently, from his role as Chef and mobilised duty onboard HMS Queen Elizabeth. Daisy crossed the Atlantic Ocean as part of his 13 month service, helping to cook and serve over 700 meals, three times a day.
"I never thought a career in the Maritime Reserves would lead to this", he said. Daisy is looking forward to home life and settling back into the Warfare Seaman Reserve branch of the Royal Naval Reserve. #DontDoTheEverydayEveryDay.

Female reservists - including one from HMS Scotia - have joined their regular Royal Navy colleagues at a football camp in Gibraltar. After a few long days of focused team work and challenging training, they are now back in the UK ready for their inter-services matches. Good luck ladies! πŸ’ͺ🏻 ⚽️ βš“οΈ
Team sports are a fun, yet important part of Royal Naval Reserve life. Come along to our next information evening to discover even more of the benefits of joining the RNR - message us for more details.

HMS Scotia is proud to continue its association with local communities and charitable causes.
Recently, the ship's company collected over 500 toiletry items to help with a homeless charity initiative in Edinburgh, organised by our own Chief Petty Officer Gibson and The Reverend Ashley-Emery, who also happens to be a 'Bish' (naval slang for chaplain) in training with us at the Royal Naval Reserve.

BZ (Congratulations!) to Midshipman Catherine Potter, who successfully passed her Fleet Board at Naval Command Headquarters last weekend. Fleet Board is a challenging examination that tests the professional knowledge that Royal Naval Reserve officers have acquired and developed during initial training. Catherine joined the RNR less than a year ago - for her to have achieved this milestone in her career so quickly is remarkable!

Today #TeamScotia is celebrating the achievements of our female colleagues and supporting the drive for gender balance. All roles in the Royal Naval Reserve are open to both males and females - and opportunities for training, progression and promotion are equal, regardless of gender.

On #WorldBookDay we’re excited to share some of our favourite books! πŸ“š πŸ“– πŸ“
Scotia reservists read to improve their knowledge of military history, to develop their cultural awareness or merely just to enjoy a few moments of peace and reflection, between juggling their civilian and Royal Naval Reserve careers.
We’d love to hear what your favourite books are, military or otherwise - please comment below!

#TeamScotia is keeping it in the family! AB Emily Wyse joined the unit a little over a year ago, and having really enjoyed all the training and opportunities on offer, she recently convinced her brother to join too. Recruit Jacob Wyse (formerly a member of TS Fife - Sea Cadets and Royal Marines Cadets.) joined his sister at our weekly training night last week, where he was formally accepted into the Maritime Reserve. Congratulations and welcome Jacob - and here's to a rewardi...ng part-time career with the Royal Naval Reserve!

We bid farewell to Winter as a team at HMS SCOTIA, joining together for a whole ship weekend. The main focus of our training was the fundamentals of Exercise Planning - culminating in us designing and executing our own training exercises. We combined our February weekend with a very belated Burns Supper - as always, it was a pleasure to share a delicious dinner and extend a true Scottish welcome to our guests. 🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 βš“οΈ

Last week, HMS SCOTIA was pleased to welcome Commander Maritime Reserves, Commodore Martin Quinn ADC, to the unit.
As well as witnessing Seamanship training and experiencing some Scottish hospitality (stovies!), he took the opportunity to speak openly with the Ship's Company on the many exciting opportunities available to our sailors in the near future. Royal Naval Reserve. #DontDoTheEverydayEveryDay

Meet Chris, one of our sailors, seen here tackling an improvised rope bridge across a 'bottomless ravine' to reach some casualties.......(in a wood in Hampshire)!
Chris has just passed the Royal Navy's Leading Rates Leadership Course - two weeks of intensive training and assessment to help our sailors develop as leaders, managers and influencers. These are invaluable, transferable skills for Chris, HMS Scotia and Chris's civilian employer. Great effort Chris, well done!
Chris... is a member of the Royal Naval Reserve Engineering Branch and an accomplished competitive kayaker. And Chris gets paid to do all this!

The Royal Navy Alpine Championships drew to a close today. A team of thirteen reservists from HMS Scotia participated, some of whom were skiing or snowboarding for the very first time. Regardless of ability, they were all provided with expert tuition - and they all participated in races...we are proud to have come home with four medals! πŸ₯‡πŸ₯‡πŸ₯ˆπŸ₯ˆ This video of the whole team together shows just how much you can learn in one week. Great job shipmates! β›·βš“οΈπŸŽΏπŸ’ͺπŸ»πŸ‚
