Latest project handover! ✅
Today marked the handover of our latest site in Ayrshire. HRH received an enquiry before the holidays where our client had recently purchased the property and wanted to restore the masonry to its original state after it had sat for a number of years with a horrible looking masonry paint on top of it.
Works began after the Christmas holidays and whilst there was plenty cursing and swearing when the numerous layers of paint were removed by hand, we a...re delighted with how this cottage has turned out.
Both chimneys were found to be in poor condition and ultimately had to be carefully dismantled to roof level and rebuilt using a lime mortar and suitably matched sandstone for all items where we beyond repair.
A full new roof was carried out by the client prior to ourselves starting which made our task slightly challenging but we got there in the end.
Pleased to get this one over the line as we did face some challenges but seeing the end result makes it worthwhile.
Before and after photos to follow!

Throwback to a project we completed for University of Edinburgh back in November. We are humbled to have been given the opportunity to work on such a fantastic building and the new lightning certainly showcases it.
Our scope of works for this project was to procure, manufacture and install a new curved disabled access ramp whilst alter an existing boundary wall.

⭕️ De-Lamination of Masonry ⭕️
This is becoming more and more common in masonry construction. Typically it’s caused where the stone has been built on the wrong bedding plane, otherwise know as face bedded.
As the video illustrates the volume of stone that can be removed in one go is rather surprising.
... Where high level works are concerned it’s not always easy to identify and in some cases a tap test can be required.

- Linostone Repairs -
One of the most common issues HRH come across on projects are ‘linostone repairs’ These repairs were all the rage starting as far back as the 60’s through to the 90’s and even later in some areas where it was a cost effective solution for the client as opposed to repairing using traditional materials. The materials that are used during this repair type are of an impervious nature meaning the masonry cant breathe naturally as it’s supposed to. The photo ...below demonstrates the linostone starting to peel and spall which over time which is certainly a danger.
We see this all over Glasgow and a lot of tenement buildings you will find have been repaired using this method. There are many ways to repair stonework however we strongly advise against this approach.
If you need know who’s building needs attention or advice on Stonemasonry then please get in touch.

HRH Masonry were kindly invited along to deliver a presentation at St Johns Primary in South Lanarkshire Council last week. As it was ‘World of Work Week’ HRH were more than happy to talk to pupils about the necessary skills required in construction.
After some productive meetings we also have other opportunities in the pipeline where we aim to help other youngsters. Stay tuned!

HIGH LEVEL MASONRY - Raising Awareness
When dealing with existing and new clients HRH always highlight the dangers of high level masonry and how the majority of people don’t fully see how dangerous some buildings can be when a planned maintenance and survey programme is not put in place. This video shows a new project we have started and the dangers of what is around us. Now that scaffold is erected we can safely dismantle this stack, carry out stone condition survey report and rebuild using an appropriately sourced sandstone.
If you have any concerns over masonry on a building then please get in touch and we would be happy to give advice.

HRH Masonry recently completed a retaining wall within the #newlanark world heritage site in South Lanarkshire.
The wall was stripped and set aside for reuse where possible.
A new concrete block retaining wall was constructed with the original stone facade built in front and pointed using a sympathetic lime mortar.

A project we have actively been involved with over the past few weeks where the original design had to be tweaked to accommodate our clients needs. On Tuesday HRH Masonry handed over the finished product which has turned out very well. Its' always satisfying seeing a project go through the various stages of the construction process including planning/design, material procurement, works being executed on site and handed over.

Throwback Thursday !
A before and after photo of a project down in Dumbarton where the old stairs where some TLC was much needed. All existing paint was carefully removed and the newly exposed masonry was repaired as necessary. In regards to the stairs our client wanted to replace the unsightly concrete with a new traditional sandstone that matches with the property.

Recently completed works to a tracery window down in Ayrshire. After an initial site survey and learning that the clients budget was limited, HRH Masonry offered a cost effective solution whereby all cementitious material was carefully removed and any substantially damaged masonry was restored using a colour matched St One mortar repair system.
Once all repairs were complete the full area was pointed with a fine ashlar lime mortar mix thus matching with the original historic mortar.

Would recommend these guys to family friends or anyone. My garden wall was pointed and it was a first class job. Scott was a very knowledgeable pleasant person to deal with and I wouldn’t hesitate to use these guys again.

Scott and John and his masonry team done a fantastic job of dismantling and rebuilding my 130 year old traditional wall.

Scott took care of all the permits council required as the wall was on a busy main road.John the builder and Eddie worked hard despite the bad weather to complete on time.

Well pleased with the final finish to detail and no hesitation in recommending HRH

Scott & team at HRH have just completed work on my property, cleaning, repairing & re-pointing the stonework. They have been a pleasure to deal with from start to finish & I am very happy with the end result. The team delivered exactly what they said they would & to a very high standard. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services & they would be my 1st port of call if I need anything further in this area in the future. Professionals - thanks very much Scott & team!

Quite simply, HRH Masonry have provided us with exemplary service from start to finish. My parent's red sandstone front steps needed to be cleaned, repointed and the top step refurbished. Scott was keen to survey and made himself available at a time which suited. From the outset it was clear that Scott was polite and professional (survey was carried out exactly on time), with a love of his craft. The job was carefully described to me, including making me aware of the limitations of what could be achieved with the cleaning. The job was then carried out at a time that suited our availability and in the timescale promised. The top step now looks like it’s brand new. HRH did a lovely job of maintaining the profile of the original carving and pointing the other steps. The fact the pointing had gone, like the profile of the top step, had been hidden by years of grime. Both look so much better now. From my experience, you won't be disappointed or let down if you engage HRH Masonry Ltd!
